S5 Vert 5 Beeps

Ok, first off I have a 1991 Convertible and I constantly get 5 beeps. When I hit bumps, it stutters but goes back to constant beeps. I've read the FAQ, and it tells me it's the turn signal sensor. So I go out to my car and align it. Well, turn signals work perfectly. Look at my visor, and it tells me its the airbags, and that they need maintenance.

What could possibly be the error that the computer is sensing? I would like to get this fixed before I go see my gf next weekend and show her my new car. And truthfully, I've never been keen on Airbags, so even if it disables it, I'm fine with that. But either way.

Thanks.

Thank you for that. I did not know that the arrow had to be at 9 on there. Damn sensor gives false directions. Says to line the arrows up. lol But I will go home and fix that.

And I know, everyone says it isn't, but why does the overhead visor say 5 beeps, pause, repeat is the airbag? Are they both the same error codes?

90 and 91 verts can use beeps to reference the SRS system.

Where are the beeps coming from??? The silver box behind the drivers dash speaker or the SRS brain or the CPU in the drivers kick panel?

It's coming from the usual beeping place. Driver side dash area. I dont think it's the silver box. I'll have to pinpoint the area in a few.

And if the wheel is straight, and I turn the steering sensor to 9 o clock, then the airbag cable wouldn't fit thought the hole.... That just doesn't make sense.

Edit:
https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...&highlight=srs

Post 12 and 13 says that if you replace the warning light, the beeping stops and the airbag light flashes 6 times. I'm gonna try that today to see what happens. See if I can get the beeping to stop. I think it is the airbag, seeing that the 91 Vert doesn't have a Steering angle sensor.

All FC's have a steering angle sensor including the 90 and 91 vert.

It is how your turn signals turn off. Now if your turn signals are not canceling then I would be looking at the power steering CPU as the one creating the beeps (although most S5 power steering CPUs do not have the power steering diagnostics).

Oh ok, well my turn signals do turn off. Those work just fine.

Lol, ok. So then the next thing to do is to change out that light.

Really it is a turn signal cancel and not an angle sensor since it works off of rotation and not off of steering wheel position.

I too am still working on my issue shown in the link above. I found the clockspring has continuity on it but it has 2 pins on each end of the plug and continuity across all 4 pins. I would think this means the wires are shorted especially since the FSM shows the airbag being wired in a closed loop and not working off of a chassis ground. I sent 915 Racing an email about their clock spring for sale on ebay and they tested several units for me and said they all showed continuity between all 4 pins. The FSM only says to test for a break in the wiring and not a short. So I either have another issue or Mazda made a whole lot of bad clock springs which would not be a surprise.

More than likely after almost 20 years the clock springs have worn out rather than bad.

If they were made bad, then they would have failed at 3 or 4 years in... not 20.

Well, the beeping did go away, sorry I didn't update. I switched out the light bulb on the idiot cluster and the beeping went away, but now the light is flashing. The fuse is good, but idk about the SRS system. I don't know how to test that atm. Anything I can look at to fix the Airbag? 5 flashes of the Airbag btw.

Houpty GT 10-14-08 11:14 AM

I will check my 1991 FSM and let you know what the 5 flash is for.

Mills 10-14-08 11:35 AM

It's an impact sensor fault, there are three of them in the front of the car.

I have the same problem :)

Thank you very much for that. I will have to check those out. So does that mean that one could have went bad? Or that the car was hit? There are marks from where a trailer hitch hit the hood and there are dents in the side of the car. Strange. Thanks for that though Mills.

Mills 10-14-08 02:20 PM

The verts use two different type of sensors, three in the front end and one behind the dash.

5 flashes is for one of the three in the front of the car, it's telling the diagnostic computer (the thing behind the drivers side dash) that it is always on.

The FSM goes on about disconnecting the sensor connectors and testing the resistance of each sensor, then plugging them back in and unplugging the diagnostic module and checking pinouts if the sensors check out OK.

The front sensors are grounded through their mounts, check them to see if they're rusted/oriented correctly/etc. If the sensors are good it's most likely a loose connection or something simple like that.

l4nc3r 10-14-08 09:30 PM

Can you give me a rough location of them? I know there are a few relays up front in the middle. I'm assuming they are around there. I'll check the fsm tomorrow when I get to work. Mills, you seriously are THE man :P Thanks so much. I'm actually in the process of putting my RB exhaust on so I'll check when I get back to work.

Houpty GT 10-14-08 10:35 PM

The FSM has it looking like the center sensor is hanging upside down towards the top of the car. The side sensors look different from each other but both look about center height-wise and towards the front corners. You may just be able to check the resistances from the electrical connectors under the dash.
