S5 transmission....
 

hi everyone first of all im a noob to this forum and im still trying to figure out all the features the forum has...i dnt know if this is the right section to post this up but anyways i just purchased a 89 RX7 GXL.... the only problem with it is the transmission.... the gear grinds when you depress the throttle in 5th gear...yes just the 5th gear other gears are pretty much alright....my question is where can i buy a transmission? Im in So Cal around Orange County...any help would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance..

West For Sale board or 2nd Gen Parts board.

You might first try an oil change.
Drain the tranny & refill with SYNTHETIC gear oil.
These tranny's love it.

I've never had a grinding problem in any of my FC's.. but I've known friends that put Redline MT-90 in and it all but cured the problem. But, a transmission that grinds gears IS on its way out.. synthetic just postpones that. :)

MT-90 will be a better choice than synthetic. IMHO, sythentic provides to much lubrication and the snycros don't work as well. MT-90 is a great lubricant but still maintains a level of resistance that is crucial for a tranny.

ive heard from many people that if your using conventional, keep it conventional, or visa versa. dont rely on my answer from changing your fluids.

I would have thought my point would have come across just as well if I wrote "synthetic" rather than "other synthetics". If this was to confusing for you, than I apoligize.

Ok, let me start over. MT-90 has a friction coefficient that is not in other synthetics. This is important in manual transmissions as it will help the syncros function properly. Most synthetics or non synthetics lubricate to much and the transmission's ability to move from gear to gear suffers. Again, sorry if I was confusing. If what I said is still unclear, my opinion (through racing and rebuilding transmissions) is that MT-90 is a superior product to any other tranny fluid I am aware of.
