S5 shifter into S4?

Ok, the search engine is worthless to words <3. Anyone know if the S5 shifter is a drop in to the S4? Id like the different thread pattern.

The S5 shifter will drop right in, however the shift knobs are different threads, so if you have a S4 car, the S4 knob will not screw onto a S5 shifter.

Right. And the S5 and FD threads are the same right? Its all ultimately for a screw on shift knob.

Yep, the S5 FC and the FD and NA (1st Gen Miata) and NB (2nd gen miata) knobs all fit and use the same thread pattern.

Of course if you go with an aftermarket knob that wouldn't matter, since almost none of those screw on.

Razo and Greddy knobs are size-specific, the way god intended an aftermarket shift knob to be :).

Pretty much all newer Mazdas use the 10mm shaft size, as opposed to the 12mm size on the older 80's Mazdas.

FD shift levers will also work, but they're not an upgrade or anything - they're real similar in design to the '89-91 lever.

hey dale,

Would the FD short shifters then work???

I'm pretty sure thats a no. I belive the shift shafts are different, and just looking at the physical differences, I would have to say no way...
