S5 gearbox into S4 model
Hi guys, I really need your help on this one...
I really need to get a new gearbox and here, in Portugal, it's really difficult to get one. But i just found a guy selling a gearbox from a S5 N/A. So, my question is, I've got a S4 N/A and I wanted to know if I can use this S5 gearbox or not and if there is any way to make it fit my car. I really hope you guys can help me because i really need to change my gearbox. Thanks. |
They're interchangeable.

Ok, thanks for the information :)

You need to use the transmission crossmember (mount) from the S5 though.

Just use the tail-shaft from your transmission and swap it with the gearbox from your car. The reason you need to do this is because the lengths of the tail-shaft in both generations are different, and so are the mounting brackets. Its Kind of tricky to swap if you dont know what your doing. But its not hard overall

Hmm.. Ok, I'll see the best way to solve this then.
Thanks a lot for the help :) |
Easier just to get the correct mount
I have it |
I dont think you can put an s4 mount on a s5 transmission, The spot on the tailshaft that the mount bolts on to is different. Unless you have some sort of custom bracket, well then that would be the easier choice.

Is there any easy way to tell whether or not you have a S4 or S5 transmission?
I think I may be having this issue with my car. I have a S4 motor and a S4 Manual LSD and Driveshaft. The only thing I'm not sure about is the gearbox which I think maybe S5 because my driveshaft has hardly any clearance. There is only about 10mm from the driveshaft flange to the input flange on the diff. |
S4 and S5 manual driveshafts are all the same length. Automatics had shorter driveshafts.
The simplest way to tell an S4 from an S5 transmission is the y-block for the crossmember. If it has 2 bolts on the bottom of the trans, it's S4. If it has 4 bolts slightly up the sides of the tail housing, it's S5. |
