S4 vs S5 LSD pumpkin difference? (n/a)

How would one go about telling the difference between a S4 and a S5 LSD out of an N/A just by looking at the pumpkin?

I'm sure there are some physical (visible) differences, but I've searched and came up empty.

If I had an S5 pumpkin, how would I know it was a viscous type as opposed to clutch type?

Thanks!!

bump.

Any ideas? Someone mentioned a nipple might be present on the S5 one for fluid. Anyone have pics of either (or both) that we could compare?

thanks!

i thought of that yesterday, someone needs to take a pic of a non lsd rear end and a lsd rear end and see if they are different, that way whenever a 16yr old who wants to know if he has lsd all they have to do is look at a pic rather than asking. its like an average of 4 posts a week about lsd's...

the only way i know how to tell them apart is with the butt-shafts out. you can see straight through the LSD rearend and the NA rearend has a bar through the middle of it.

To my knowledge there is no external difference between s4 and s5 diffy's. LSD or non LSD. I havbe dealt with them all. The LSD's should have a tag on the fill bolt, the open will not.

There is a nipple on top of all of the diff's for a pressure vent.

with the butt-shafts out
LMFAO...

Bitchmill sounds like he has experience with "butt shafts"...

:rlaugh:

im gonna have experience with your buttshaft landers

Just to clarify, please read my original post -- I don't care about the difference between a non-lsd and lsd. I want to know how to tell 2 N/A lsds apart, one being S4 & one being S5. So it sounds like what Kevin is saying is that there is no way to tell w/o disasembling the pumpkin itself?

that sucks.

There is a minor difference in the pumpkin between the S4 and S5 where the jack support is.

but there is no external way to tell the difference if it has a LSD or not on a S5

Trav 01-26-04 09:47 PM

Yeah, and I'm pretty confident that I can tell it's an LSD -- what 'minor difference' is there? Obviously pics would be best -- I can't even find decent pics anywhere...

It went from a solid round jack spot, to one with with a large slot in the middle.

Trav 01-26-04 11:08 PM

I'll keep that in mind. Thanks Mark!

See the slot on the S5 where on the S4 it is solid?

Trav 01-27-04 11:45 AM

I think so... problem is now I'm not sure if I'll have access to the entire assembly or just the LSD unit removed from it...

So what's with the label I've got on mine? It's a little metal tab hanging off of the drain bolt (I guess that's what it is) that says what kind of diff it is. It's on a 88GXL.

Trav 01-27-04 12:18 PM

From what I understand, the tag will indicate it's an LSD. Problem is, most tags are probably gone after 15 yrs & 100k miles, so if it's missing, that doesn't mean it's not an LSD.
