I can't see how a lack of oil results in those gear teeth being so completely mangled. Could someone explain that? What's the cause & effect sequence there?

Both front and rear rotors are spinning.
The eccentric shaft suddenly wants to stop.
The contact of the (rear) stat gear contact the rotor gear at only a small portion of the gear itself.
It's not a pretty picture.

Ted... when the eccentric shaft stops, the rotor stops... and i could see what you mean by when it jumped a gear or two... but all the gears are messed.... when it stops, wouldnt it ruined a gear or two at most? it seems like it was ran with a broken tooth it sent the debris to every other gear and damage all the other gears... not from just one rev, but from many rev until the stationary gear gave out and dig into the e-shaft???

The entire RA (rotating assembly) is not very tight.
In fact, I've seen "slop" up to several millimeters in same cases.
If the first few teeth fail, it could be possible the eccentric shaft could've slip - seize - slip - seize (you get the point), cause I'm pretty sure the car was still in gear and rolling.
So, you have the entire mass of the car still in motion pushing the engine still.
You think the entire engine could stop the rolling mass of the car?
If this is the case, it's most likely the rear stat gear bearing should've came out of it's "lock tab" - can't tell from pic.

Of course, this is all a mental exercise in theory...
