s4 and s5 NA 5 speed tranny
I've searched and it looks like the s4 and s5 NA tranny are basically the same. It appears there is only a small 5th gear change depending on year and LSD.
Before I buy this tranny, any of you experts please confirm the 5spd NA tranny will work in both s4 and s5 without problem? I know the tubo tranny is different and requires lots of mods. Here is the tranny, I'm told it's out of an 88 NA. http://http://i19.ebayimg.com/05/i/000/8d/ag/8aef_1.JPG |

yes, all NA trannies are interchangable
i also remember hearing that the S5 tranny has stronger syncros? but i might be thinking of the S4/S5 R trannies. |
yeah, its just the 5speed/Auto driveshafts that are different... you need a 5speed driveshaft.

i think he already has a 5speed... and if it was an auto, hed need more than just the driveshaft, if i remember correctly, the rear end is different as well. i think its a 3.90 for the autos

Thanks guys. All I'm trying to confirm is that all NA 5spd trannys from 86-91 (S4 and S5) are interchangeable. The only difference in them being 5th gear ratio depending on year and LSD.
From your answers, it appears all NA 5spd trannys S4 and S5 are interchangeable. Does the tranny above look like a S4 or S5 NA 5spd? |

Make sure you use the same crossmember as the trans. The main external difference in the s4 and s5 trans is the crossmember mount. The mounts are not interchangeable between the series. Either the s4 and s5 crossmembers will bolt up to each others subframe. End result--use the crossmember for the trans.
