S4 - S5 Front bumper cover conversion qustion
hey guys, i purchased a used s5 front bumper cover last month (on ebay) to convert it. and when i went to change it yesterday, the brackets (forgot the name of it) that attaches the cover to the fenders couldn't be attatched because the flap that holds the bracket was ripped off. apparently the fucker that sold it to me didnt know about how to take it out and just yanked it out. right now it's installed and i have an aftermarket lip that is installed to "reinforce" the cover but with some pretty big gaps it looks so ugly. have any of you guys experience this and if so what did you do? i'll post pic as soon as i get home so you can see what i'm talking about. thanks

Should have read the directions. I tell my students this all the time.

if you have the old s4 bumper instead of fiberglassing new mounting points why not fiberglass tabs back??? you can also take a thin sheet of tin and cut out to make a "L" bracket and rivet to bumper then to the other piece. now before u rivet it grind a little bit of the bumper before u drill the hole and insert the rivet. thats so it will leave it flush then swipe a pass of bondo ,sand, and u had to paint the bumper anyways, so problem solved.. thats how we do body kits and stuuff u have to improvise at times but the thing is to "take pride in what you hide".-Erik

the fenders are not the problem, guess i'm stuck with these til i find another one.
|
aren't your bolt strips installed???
the strips of steel with bolts welded to them that stitch the fender's leading edge to the bumper where they meet? every one ive taken apart I break at least half the bolts off of each side and have to weld in new ones to the strip before I install the cover....if those aren't in place with all the bolts intact you'll have gaps like yours.... either way...I would fab up something to work in there or go to a scrapyard or classified seciton and find some so you can sinch those gaps up to a bodyman's standard - lol good luck edit: sick phone dials BTW |
dude... the smae thing happened to me when I bought a new used bumper for my car... got the bumper and it looked fine, I went to put it on the car and the top section of the urethane strip was ripped and the bumper wont pull flush with the fender... it pisses me off... but not enough to make me fix it... and now I've got a new car so I dont even worry about it.

It definately helps to have straight fenders... Why don't you just squeeze some good paintable caulk in the gap and smooth it over? |
the fenders are fine (besides the dent on the passenger side..no biggie) i'm talking about the side set plate that connects the cover to the fenders. you're supposed to put it behind the flaps of the cover then screw it to the fender. what i was talking about is there is no flap for the plates to grab the cover because the last person ripped it out. look at the fsm under body and you'll see what i'm talking about
|
I know what you're saying... I've taken apart and put together dozens of these things... The only thing you can really do in this situation is fab up a new plate and attach it with some fiberglass...
|
will the fiberglass adhere to the urethane? of just fab up the flap?
