S4 NA to s4 TII emissions harness question.
Hey guys here's a quick recap of what I have before asking my question: I've got an 86 GXL with an 88 TII engine swap in progress. I am using the turbo emissions harness and I'm aware that using the NA harness would've made for an easier swap but I have a mint condition s4 turbo harness with the injector resistor set up. I've got the N318 sensor and a N333 ECU Rtek 1.8 ver 1.1.1
I'm currently trying to begin the process of modifying my harness to accept the NA body harness at the FEM-02 plug and FEM-01. So far I have de-pinned the 2 wires on the 15 pin connector on the harness side. (BR/R and B) pictured with green arrows. Also in the picture above I've moved the LgB Wire from the 13 pin connector to the 15 pin. (Red arrow)https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...4a19c355c8.jpg I've done quite a bit of research and ive found a few posts that put me in the right direction but I'm stil unsure if this is all that needs to be done or if I'm doing it correctly at all. Also I've been using this picture for reference but it would be really help to know which cavities within the 2 connectors tell you what each wire goes to because rats nest was removed and power steering as well so i would like to de-pin those https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...078013800c.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...689349ef3a.jpg |
it's been about 10 years since i did what you are attempting, so i won't be of much use. just study the turbo pinout and the n/a pinout side by side and swap the appropriate wires. don't go by wire color, go by what the wires use is.

there is wiring pinouts in the appropriate series wiring diagrams, those are the pages i used instead of the ones you have above. you can find them at foxed.ca

..before you get head over heel in that harness..are you going to eliminate the Rat's nest?..
Is the car going to be power steering? are you keeping the S4 Turbo or going to another setup? |

anyone? i just need to verify which pins to swap over. thank you guys

ive tried going over this https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generati...wiring-749237/ thread and im still lost, sorry about the triple post. im not trying to have you guys do it for me, i just cant seem to understand what to do.

So what exactly are you trying to do. get the car to start? if so there are some wire I know that needs to be pulled and others don't really matter the wiring colors just don't match due to body and and harness difference between the N.A> and Turbo models

edit: nice to see a fellow rotary fan in the High Desert, noticed you are in Victorville, Im about 45 mins away in Lancaster |
I used the N/A Body harness.Since the car was N/A and the engine was now turbo I wasn't gonna start screwing with wiring just to get the Boost gauge to function..I would actually NEED a Turbo Cluster and then have to wire it in...Why?...don't make sense..car runs..
Gauges?..We don't need no stinkin gauges..hahhaha! If you can get by without that, then just toss in a aftermarket boost gauge and you are Rockin my friend. |

I'll send you pics of my harness when I get home from O.C. the yellow and white wire. Need to match for you temp gauge to work right. The blue and black wire and the black and red one if I'm not mistaken. I used a TII harness on my Vert when I did a TII swap with harness.

Ok so after sorting all the EMISSIONS harness questions out, I'm now stuck on wiring up the "TEE" connector on the back of the alternator. Since my chassis is a s4 NA, the original alt wiring was connected to the EMISSIONS harness and now that I'm using the TII emissions harness I do not have the TEE connector for the back of the alt. With the turbo model the alt wiring is connected to the BATTERY (or TRANSMISSION harness). Afer looking over this picture:
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...803e8799c2.jpg I cant seem to understand where to wire the (R) and (L) terminals. Also, where does the blue "DASH" connector come from? From what i understand, the (R) terminal goes to switched ign and then i cant seem to figure out where to run the (L) terminal to. thanks guys |
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...e04a287961.jpgThe black wire is used as voltage for the alt itself on S5 and is to the Main 80amp fuse. Yellow and white goes to yellow and white for temp gauge to work. Brown and red i dont remember why i pulled have to look up in FSM.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...495f14d3e9.jpgLeft is N.A. harness and Right is TII harness to run turbo swaps on NA chassis body harness. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...b6e1b4cfb4.jpgNa Left TII right Blue Black strip connector https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...6f17ce7e58.jpgLeft NA Right TII Blue and Black strip wire pulled |
On the N.A. harness the T (connector ) wires are White/black strip and Black /White strip, as for the TII I'm not sure at the moment to take pics due to my stock TII harness is on the car and my mangled and not not sure what wires are where but I think since the black wire power the alt. It may be Black and Black/White strip (open for corrections if wrong) would be the other T on the TII harness. I'm returning back to stock ECU setup and wiring harness and haven't really checked difference in harness just wire chasing for functions a few months ago.

I'm in the same boat as you. 87 turbo II swap into a 87 NA. Didn't think when I was collecting the swap that a NA harness would have been the easier route. Thinking about just buying a NA harness but I'm going to give a stab at re pinning.
About the alternator it looks like from the FSM that EM-36, the Alternator clip that's W/B and B/W goes to FEM-01 EM harness (15 pin connector) in the NA EM harness. |
Alternator with TII harness in NA chassis
I think B/W goes from the alt to an ignition hot source and W/B comes through the alt warning light relay in the CPU on the NA that the ABS control unit is on but I'm bad at understanding wiring diagrams.
Both Turbo and NA have this relay in them so I'm guessing if you find which pin it is in the CPU you wire that going to the alt and other wire going to an ignition hot power source? Anyone more knowledgeable care to correct me if I'm wrong? https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...8e9a41beb5.png |
B/w gets taped up for a S5 alt, you run the other wire to a constant hot. I've had mine run to the 80amp main fuea on the shock tower, but looking at other pics I might run it directly to the ring terminal when I go and work on mine since I've pulled my turbo harness and ECU (going back stockish) because I need to drive my car again from sitting and getting beat to hell by the sun and wind...
