RX8 front cover gasket with OMP delete mod

This is a mod every one who eliminates the OMP and premixes should do. I'm not the first to do it, or post a how to (rotaryheads has the best write up), but thought this might help some one. Before I did this I was “that guy” at the auto-cross drippin oil at the start line.

First order an rx8 front cover gasket from Mazda, it's cheap, eliminates the water pump gasket, and is a metal gasket which hold clearances better, reusable most of the time, and F'in stay in-place we you put the cover on.

Then cut the gasket to fit your Fc as shown in the pics below, keep the left overs to use as a shim on the far left water pump bolt

Then go to the hardware store of your choice, with the gasket in hand buy a short set screw that just barely doesn't fits into the oil transfer hole in the front cover gasket. Buy the tap and drill bit that matches the set screw.

Now comes the scary part, drill and tap your engine just enough to tighten the set screw in (at your own risk). Or the faint of hear you could just tap the front cover but then you run the risk of a high pressure leak which was my reason for the mod in the first place. Make sure you cover your drill and tap with anti-sieze to collect metal shavings, use the turbo oil feed on the top on the front plate to flush oil through to wash any shavings out you missed. Use a vacuum if you have one. (DO NOT USE PRESSURE!!! using WD40 can or air pressure could force the metal into the front bearing!!!)

Use loctite and install set screw, measure the length it hangs out and drill the front cover with one size bigger drill bit than the one that came with the tap. I put a second set screw in my front cover because they come in packs of two, and I almost pussied out of tapping my block.

Remove all OMP stuff from front cover (gains you 0.00003 hp just like stickers !) and install block off covers from your favorite store. Put o-ring on with some grease to hold it, slap the gasket on after drilling the oil transfer hole out to clear the set screw (watch out the gasket will rap around your drill bit, a punch would be a good option).

This mod was well worth the time, and my engine has never been cleaner.
