rx7's don't like the cold?
Ok it was 6 degrees out and the wind chill was at -12 degrees at some points last night. I needed to drive my 7 today because my wife has my winter beater due to her car in the shop. the 7 did not want to start at all it cranked and it wanted to start but it didn't turn over, i tried about 6 times and i gave up, could anyone tell me what it is, being that my 7 ran perfect the day before because i had to use it. but it was 32 degrees yesterday! please let me know whats up with it!

o yeah it is an 87 rx 7 t2

Yeah it doesn't like the cold.
You might try some antiflooding techniques. You'll also want to replace the plugs and make sure your battery is fully charged, this could help with getting it to start. I ran mine last winter in CO. I think the coldest i had to start it was around 10, but it might have been colder. I never really had a problem getting it to fire. |
man it sucks because lastnight it was cold and it didn't want to start at first then it started about the third time but today it was cold i mean i had ice on my roof and windows but it wanted to start but it never did. it was so cold i couldn't even put the car in gear

Mine starts easily when cold. I have a great battery, synthetics everywhere, and an overly maintained motor.
Get oil or coolant heaters, a trickle battery charger, and plug the car in an hour before you need to go somewhere. |
Also helps to use a thinner oil, my GTUs has fired up in -30 when I was shuffling around it's place in the garage.
|
My 7 kinda hiccupes to life in the cold, but when its warm it's normal, weird.
|
keep a good battery! need to have it cranking fast to start in the cold easily
|
battery is fairly new maybe two years but i have it on the battery charger now so it is going to charge for like 8 hours so if i let it sit for 8 hours do i need to go thur the flood process?
|
a two year old battery is nearly done with its life...it doesnt really matter how you maintain the battery they just dont last that long in harsh climates.
|
matter of fact i just looked at my papers the battery was 12/9/05 install

There's several types of "cold" issues. The injectors tend to leak a bit more (have them rebuilt people) and when auto de-flooding the engine (SV only) it starts right up instead of running rought with a normal start. You'll notice in the summer it will either 1) start right up or 2) floods in the 5-120minuet range but will start fine the next morning no problem.
If the starter is turning slowely, it can be the battery or bad grounding. If you notice excessive cold performance issues from the trans or diff (bogs down or needs double-clutching to shift smoothly) then you should consider redline synthetic gear oil that's made SPECIFICALLY for a mazda manual transmission (one type of oil) and SPECIFICALLY for a mazda differential (different type of oil). |
well i am just going to let it sit for a while because it is getting warmer for the next few days, then i will try it out because it is not catching it does for a second or two but then that is it! should i get some dry gas? or some gas heet
|
if your dead set on getting it running - bump start the biatch...
if that doesn't do it then you are OUT OF LUCK do you have fuel pump switch? any mods that may be involved in hiccuping in subzero temps? |

The tranny is also making funny noises, especially when getting off the clutch and taking off. The tranny is making a *clank* kind of noise when the tranny is put into 1st or 2nd and you step on the gas. Just one clank, and the tranny itself is getting louder. |
wow that sounds like a problem! but i can tell you this my fc is not even going into gear it was so cold here! it warmed up some and i went out and played with the gears and it went into all the gears now. i am going to go home after work and see if she starts because it went from -6 to 35 degrees here so it is a lot warmer out so i will see i will keep you updated!
