RX7 being taken 1500 miles on sunday...
 

Okay so obviously this is a big road trip, going back to college :D So the engine has 30k miles on it for the past 6 years, since it was put in brand new in the car. I'm getting it checked out tomarrow at my uncles shop, is there anything specific that I should ask him to look for? What things should I do to the car before I go? I'm having the oil changed by him while he has it, and I'm getting the spark plugs and wires from mazda and putting them in also, and I have a bottle of fuel injector cleaning that is also going in tomarrow. What else should be done? God forbid, if something goes wrong with the car on the way, how do rotaries last when things go wrong? Are they notorious for anything during long drives, anything I should keep an eye on? Anything you guys can think of will be greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

Sweet man! I am leaving on a road trip Sunday too! Central VA to Southern TX (1700 miles). Maybe we will cross paths?

Just bring tools. Change the oil before you leave. And make sure it all looks good under the hood. (Belts, hoses, and such. Keep an eye on tire pressurers. 32 psi. It will save you some gas.

Also, check your o2 sensor for proper operation. Do a search. That should yield how to do that.

Oh this Sunday. I am leaving the Sunday after Turkey day.

Check your wheel bearings also. Also, make sure you do check all your running lights. Do not want to be pulled over for something stupid like that.

Sweet man, thanks. I'll make sure to check that stuff, and yeah putting more pressure in the tires was also on my list of things to do, and the belts are loose to, so I'll make sure to check that. If anybody see's an '88 Red Base model with a damn turbo II hood on it, lol stupid old owner, and two guys in it that look pretty damn tired with a Louisiana plate, thats prolly me! :D

I just drove from Mass to Minnesota... through Syracuse actually!

No problems on the drive, cept that as much as i love the car it gets friggin uncomfortable after a while.

Watch out for roadkill though... i almost wiped out on what was left of a deer.

JK. This summer, I drove my '91 n/a from Maryland to Missouri over 2 days. Then to Dallas a couple weeks later. Back to Missouri, and then straight through back to Maryland. Over 16 hours of driving. My X has over 140K miles on it, original engine. Maybe it was a slight leap of faith, but I made it and she's still going strong.

A little advice, after about 10 hours, coffee is your friend. :tonque:

Yeah dude takin it all in one straight shot, don't got time to waste man! :) It'll take about 24 hours of driving to get back to syracuse. Will that make it harder on the engine though? I don't want to stop at like a hotel or anything, not that I can afford it anyway, but I'm worried that it could not be good that we're not stopping for the night.

Dude, that is a lot of driving. You might want to consider a hotel. They can be as cheap as 30 a night. Not like you need the ritz. If you are driving solo that is crazy not to stop.

I was planning on finding the mid point in my drive and posting it on lounge. Maybe I could stay at a forum members place. You could try that?

Yeah well my bro wants to drive straight through, and he's the one who wants to drive at night time, he loves to drive during the nights. Yeah he's weird like that I guess, lol. So hey he can do all the night drivin while I get some rest in :o: But that forum member's place is a good idea.

I wanna go on a road trip too, DAMMIT, but I have no where to go.

heh i drove 24 hours straight once solo - texas to mass

there are parts of it i dont remember at all. i think i fell asleep in PA for about 10 minutes and just got real lucky

never again. a hotel for 30-40 a night is worth it even though you hate yourslef for wasting time

i would think that a long extended drive at highway speeds wouldnt hurt your engine at all.

yup, i drove from my school (about 1.5hrs north of San Fran) to san diego and back in the same day. not a problem at all, just make sure all your fluids are good and full. damn i forgot how awesome road trips are in the 7...i miss mine

I just drove from Miami to TN, no probs.... 124000, 24000 on engine, had a blast, I guess 1600 mi or so and avgd 22mpg

Check water temp durring drive, god forbid it over heats. Also check Oil level At about every other time you fill up for gas. And top it off it needs some. Remeber your car uses about 1 qt. every 1000 miles. Have fun. :)

Make sure your battery and alternator are up to snuff... my alt went out during a long trip and wasn't fun :)

make sure you dont use the heater too much. It makes you sleepy. Also have plenty of caffinated beverages. But they make you PEE so be sure to look out for rest areas. They are faster then Getting off the highway. Just look out for the Homos. J/K

i drove my FD and FC's on long distance trips...... both 1000 mile round trips.... many times. never had one problem as long as the car is properly maintained it will be fine. the only time i ever got stranded was when i was doing something dumb and i only do dumb stuff nearby where i live ;)

Road trips are great! Used to take the chevy to El paso and back from dallas, and houston and back. Not really big road trips, but i am only 17 :eek: but i'm sure the fc will be fine in the road.

PLEASE get a hotel. Do not take the trip in one shot. My g/fs car was getting towed once (it was a Jetta) and the tow truck guy fell asleep and drove off the road at about 50 or so. Just barely missed the telephone poles. He was close enough to them (in the grass might I add) that I couldn't walk between the truck and the mirror.

As for technical stuff, can't think of anything that I haven't already read, but don't make it one trip :)
