RX-7 newbie
Hi everyone. I just got a 91 vert with a blown motor for free. I'm going to get a used motor and use it as my daily driver. I've been a muscle/ pony car guy my whole life. I have 2 Camaros, a 2001 Z28, and my first car, a '71 Camaro. I don't know much about rotaries, but I'm excited to learn. :bigthumb:

Two Camaros? Hmmmmm... Ask for some metric sockets and wrenches for Christmas.

Check out the FAQ threads stickied at the top - for sure..

Congrats and welcome. Why not yank that blown engine and rebuild it? You'll learn ALOT right off the bat, its (usually) cost effective in comparison to getting another engine, it'll be reliable if you do it right, and (as someone doing thier first rotary rebuild right now) its not NEARLY as hard to rebuild as a conventional engine IMHO. I'm actually having a good time rebuilding this engine, which wasn't the case when I rebuilt a few piston based engines.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've been checking out the FAQs and stickies periodically. I'm supposed to be working. ;) Where can I get the parts for the rebuild? How much does it run to rebuild a rotary? I can get a used motor for $800. Is there anything I can do performancewise before I put the enging in that I should do that is smog legal in California. Are headers legal. Again, thanks for the input.

No ideas on the CA laws, but a rebuild can be done for a few hundred dollars if you only need to replace the coolant seals (equivalent of the head gasket on a normal engine) and it can go way up to over a thousand or more if you have a bad rotor housing. It all depends on the damage. Any idea whats wrong with it?

I like to think of myself as an eclectic (SP?) person. Thanks. |
