RX-7 Basics

Hello, I'm a '84 Celica owner and I love it. ALthough everytime I see a 2nd generation RX I tend to think differently.

I know some about Rx-7's but not a whole lot.

I'm planing on buying a '88+ rx within a year if i can and i need to know as much about them as i can too.

First, whats the difference between the 86-87 rx than the 88-82? I already noticed the taillights are different but what else?

How many models and what are the models of the 2nd gen RX's?

Whats a good price for a GXL or a Turbo II?

Whats should i look out for when looking at a rx? besides the usual (smoke, rust)?

Besides Worn apex seals, whatelse can go wrong on a rotary? And how muuch do apex seals normally cost to replace and how easy is it to do youself?

Sorry about all the questions, i just have a million more... but maybe if i get directed to the right website or if you guys are willing to help i'll get them all answered.

Thanks for your time and help,
x John B.

86 87 and 88s are all the same. I suggest you just read these. It will probably answer all your q's.

Electrical problems. And apex seals require you rip the entire motor apart.

go to: http://www.aaroncake.net/RX-7/buy1.htm
and http://www.aaroncake.net/RX-7/buy2.htm
They explain a lot of what to look for.
BTW 86-88 is a series 4, and the 89-91 are series 5. Series 5 have the round taillights, and a lot of other improvements under the hood.

Do all the second gens come with 4 wheel steering, normal/sport shocks, and LSD?

dr0x 03-20-03 10:04 PM

No. If you read the links I posted one of them goes over that.

1987RX7guy 03-20-03 10:06 PM

no I don't have and LSD or AAS I would get a series four (S4) 86-88 model they are lighter than S5 89-91. Replacing apex seals involves rebuilding the entire engine. basicaly like frying your piston rings in a regular car.

darkwaveboi 03-20-03 10:07 PM

i have yet to see a 2nd gen w/ 4 wheel steering ;)

dr0x 03-20-03 10:08 PM

They have that stupid crap like 4ws. I forget what its called, DVS?

I'm in the process of reading them, they are pages in length and i thought it would be faster to get my answer from you guys. I didnt know you guys were so short and bland, sorry, sheesh

Just be happy i'm looking into buying a RX-7 than sticking with my Celica.

1987RX7guy 03-20-03 10:12 PM

don't sweat it bro these guys do that to everyone that is new here. I got the same treatment and still do when I do dumb shit.

File 03-20-03 10:17 PM

I guess i'm not used to being the new guy considering i was so into Celica forums.

I guess I just want to know what would be the best year/model RX-7 to keep my eye out for.

I can learn about them on my own time... I just dont know what models come with what.

1987RX7guy 03-20-03 10:23 PM

Ok daily driver that wont be too expensive to keep running good would be a S4 N/a . I have an 87 SPort this model came with only the basic luxuries. Also with four piston calipers and a stiff suspension. I think the only thing my car has that is luxury is the sun roof. I you get a GXL for instance you will get the fat mans car. It has power everything and is the heaviest of the FC's

Now after I just said that about N/a's all the TII guys are going to say yeah right Turbo cars are reliable and faster than N/a's Some can be reiable but they require more funds and knowhow. I am still a fledgling here so I will not speak for the TII.

File - I wasnt trying to be rude. I was just saying that the shit I posted had a lot of information in it and would answer every question you have asked in greater detail than anyone here would.

DTS is the 4 wheel steering you guys are looking for. Some people like it, some don't, personally I never liked it yet have not had the chance to take apart the rear suspension to replace the bushings with the DTS eliminator bushings.
