Running "hotter" spark plugs

right now its pretty cold in stl, down in the low teens, and my fc just dosnt want to start. i know running "hotter" plugs will help it start normally, but will they make a difference when it is this cold?

I don't think plugs do all that much for starting. I went to a hotter plug in my escort because the advanced timing was fouling out stock plugs but it had no affect on starting.

Hotter plugs prevent spark plug fouling. Colder plugs prevent detonation. www.howstuffworks.com has more information.

I wouldn't think spark plugs would affect starting. Hotter plugs will warm up faster but I can't see that making a difference. It's the spark that ignites. If your plug body ignites your fuel then you'll get detonation.

Maybe your plugs are fouling out because you are running to cold of a plug doing city driving or not hard driving.

What are you running?

im pretty sure they are ngk's but i think they are stock spec. i got em at napa real cheap.

Icemark 01-28-07 08:51 PM

if you are not burning through plugs or getting any detonation, there should not be any problem with running hotter plugs

Cpt.Zanzibar 01-28-07 08:54 PM

i dont have any problems with detonation. actually now that i think about it, i changed the last set of plugs because they were gas fouled. im thinking im going to pick up some hotter plugs.

If you're using FireFox, try using IE- I had the same problem, Mazdatrix wouldn't let me go through the checkout process until I fired up IE and used it. Damn annoying, but it did work.

yup, i used ie and it worked fine. i still hate ie.

How you know it's the spark plugs?
How about you take pics and post them here?

well, i dont have a camera, but they are black and have little spceks of shit on them and they reek of fuel. and some times they are moist.

well the last 2 times this has happened it has been the plugs. every time it wont start when it gets cold, i change the plugs and its ok. i have a very trustworty mechanic and family friend do the inspection the last 2 times and he agrees it has to be the plugs being too cold.
