RPM tach not working

just bought my 1990 FC rx7, everything seems decent, being a ‘track car’ except the fact that the rpm tach doesn’t work at all. It’s a stock, rebuilt 13b. I’ll be honest, I haven’t spent much time trying to figure this out...this car is completely foreign to me. I’ve owned 80’s and 90’s corollas up until now, decided to go a different route recently and all of a sudden, have the slightest clue what I’m looking at when I open this hood...rotary is an entirely different world than any car I’ve touched. Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the board. :)

I would start by finding the trailing coil. I don't know if anything has been moved around since you described the car as a "race car", but if they are where they came from the factory, then it should be behind the driver's side strut tower (toward the firewall). Check, repair or replace and see if it works then.

Yes, trailing and leading coils are still in place. A botched emissions delete seems to be the only thing misplaced in the car. Lots of open vaccum and vaccum lines leading to no where. The omp has been disconnected as well, Which I’ve heard is common. I took it out to a drift event recently and the rpm tach started working mid run all of a sudden! Mind you, this is after I pulled my vaccum caps out and capped every line I could find that was left open by the last owner. The car took a beating and consequently does not run anymore. Crank/ no start... I’m gonna start with spark plugs and go from there. It did overheat and I am afraid I’ll have to dig into the engine to replace coolant lines.
