rough ride

i just bought an 87, and the ride is very bumpy. i don't know if its the tires or the suspension, or what.

JCurry 01-14-05 06:38 PM

check your tire pressure, and does it have aftermarket suspension

jerd_hambone 01-14-05 07:38 PM

the tire pressure was checked today when i bought it. and its all stock. the tires were pumped up to either 15 or 20 pounds of pressure, i'm not sure though.

jerd_hambone 01-14-05 07:42 PM

also, how can you tell what model they are? all i know is mine is an 87 non turbo.

porscheboy321 01-14-05 07:59 PM

wheelbearings might need to be tightened

Icemark 01-14-05 08:06 PM

define "very bumpy".

Doe sthe car loose traction over bumps or is it the car rides too firm comparied to what you have driven in before, or you have low profile tires and worn out shocks or what...

But just "very bumpy" could mean 1000 different things.

jerd_hambone 01-14-05 08:14 PM

as in when i drive, little bumps seem like huge pot holes. the tires are slightly worn. it does lose traction a little.

Icemark 01-15-05 12:56 AM

sounds like worn struts

jerd_hambone 01-15-05 10:10 AM

i know it needs new tires, but i don't think it should be that rough of a ride from just tires.

andrewb70 01-15-05 10:17 AM

Sounds like you have never had a sports car before.

Andrew

jerd_hambone 01-15-05 10:22 AM

well other than the fact that it hits small bumps hard enough to almost make it lose control.... sounds like something is wrong.... but thats just to me...

Icemark 01-15-05 11:08 AM

yeah that points to worn struts or other worn out suspension parts.

But probably worn out struts

jerd_hambone 01-15-05 11:19 AM

yeah... it has the auto adjustable suspension, but i don't think it works.

jerd_hambone 01-15-05 11:22 AM

the people that had it before me put rims on it... i don't know if that would make anything different though.

what size??? If they are really low profile (such as 17" or 18 " wheels) that too can contribute to bump steer, and poor handling.

jerd_hambone 01-15-05 12:50 PM

they are 15's so there shouldn't be lo pro's on it. the tires are very worn though.

therotaryrocket 01-15-05 12:55 PM

does it still have the rims on it? did you say 15-20psi of tire pressure, should be like 35 psi. dryrotted or old tires also ride pretty rough.

jerd_hambone 01-15-05 01:09 PM

the rims are still there, the tires are about a qyarterinch from being bald..lol

This means it's the factory shocks.. Listen to IceMark :) I just changed out the shocks on my 86, it turned out they were factory in the front... I could push the shock down with my hand they were so useless. This is probably what it is. You'll want to get some new springs as well, since yours are probably shot from completely supporting the car like mine were.

jerd_hambone 01-15-05 10:57 PM

where can i get new shocks/struts, and springs? and about how much will they be?

BlaCkPlaGUE 01-16-05 12:08 AM

I'd purchase the ones from speedmachineperformance.com, they have a nice suspension kit for a moderate price.

I've also heard that racing beat makes a suspension kit, I'd look into that first, explore all your options before you buy of course.

I too have the same problem, car is bumpy as hell, I did the manual bounce test and it didn't look to good. Kind of ironic, I want a new suspension set becuase my current one is garbage, but the new one will be for performance and not comfort, the very reason why im buying it :D

jerd_hambone 01-16-05 09:37 AM

i want one for performance, but i also would like to be able to handle driving the car everyday...lol

jerd_hambone 01-16-05 03:31 PM

i think its my tires.. they are horrible.... they will only hold 10 psi..... all the rest leaks out.... so if its still rough when i get new tires, i'll buy shocks/struts, and springs....

RSVampire 01-16-05 09:08 PM

while we're talking about suspension I was wondering why the Tokico springs lower the front of the car 0.8" and the rear 1.5"!! Why!?

jerd_hambone 01-17-05 08:52 AM

to make it sit flat instead of down at an angle.. i think, not sure though...
