rotor side seals is stuck
 

i just bought a set of rotors, and after looking at them, one side of one got hot and the side seals are stuck below the surface. I tryed pulling it out and it broke any other ideas? Corbit

IF you take apart many cores you'll find this happens a lot. There is no good way to get them out, other than soaking for extended periods in solvents, or mild heat with a torch to expand the slot some. I have a special made tool that actually fits into the groove, that allows me to tap on the broken edge of the side seal and try to get it to slide slowly out of the slot. If it wont come out, the rotor is useless. BTW, this isnt from excessive heat, it is from being left to sit too long, or from rust. This is why we always store engines with oil or atf or other lubricant inside if not being driven more than a month or 2.

If you choose to soak it in solvents to get it out, be carefull not to get any on the bearing, most solvents are caustic and will eat away at the metal. :cool:

new seals , no dout. I did try a little heat and i made a creviseing tool to open up the slot but no dice. I'm letting it soak over night, hopefully that may help.

You dont want to "open up" the slot any if you can help it. IF you do, the new seal will move and break in those spots, and youll lose compression.

Also, I have never seen any bearing damaged by solvents.

kevin the one side of the rotor did get hot, the bearing is fried. the opening for the side seal got hot and it looks a little narrower in the center. I took a side seal a have bein working at it to open it up to its original with.

heat should work because the aluminium will expand a fair bit,but be careful i have never tried it

Get a another rotor... this one is forked....

Nasty solvents are caustic and will attack the surface, if you don't plan on replacing the bearing make sure none gets on it. Its from a good source :)

Although soaking for an hour or two wont hurt it too much I would think, just extended periods are bad.

what solvents are we talking about here?
