rotor damage, dont let it happen to you.
 

Ok, so I buy these 2 rotors from a forum member for use in rebuilds. He stated that one was excellent, and one had a scratch on the face but he believed it to be useable. I paid for them and he shipped them.

Now, this kind of thing happens all the time. Seems people dont realize that rotors are probably the softest part of the engine, or the easiest to damage. All the tolerances/clearances are very important, and the least bit of impact with anything will make an entire rotor unuseable.

So, if you're shipping rotors, be SURE theyre adequately packaged, especially at the corners, where the materials are their thinnest. Otherwise, here is what you'll get.

Basically, I paid actual money for these rotors, and neither is useable to me. Moreover, the seller did not insure the package (he used USPS of all places, at least UPS gives you an automatic $100 insurance so I could recoup my losses) so Im left with no recourse on these 2.

IT's things like this that have made me change my rebuild procedure. From now on, if you want an engine rebuilt, you have to send me your core first, or you dont get one. This will help take some of the stress off of me, trying to buy up core parts such as those above, for use in engines where people refuse to send in cores. For whatever reason, about 90% of the people who call up wanting engines, expect to get one without sending a core. So, it makes it hard on me, having to constantly search out and purchase cores not knowing their true condition until they get here.

True, Ill still need core replacement parts even when requiring cores up front to build from, but in general the requirement will be much less on my part since I only have to find one rotor or housing instead of all the irons and 2 rotors/rotorhousings.

you didnt use onna those in my engine did ya as punishment ;). But seriously..that fucking sucks. Kevin also told me that my rotor i bought had been shipped shitty as hell also and was surprised nothing had been damaged.

Kevin, I really appericate that instead of going insane and saying "DON"T EVER BUY FROM THIS GUY or I WAS RIPPED OFF" You instead provide us with a good example of a bad rotor and what you have to deal with. Your professionalism is hope that people are not out there to just make money but to make the community aware, smarter, and thankful. Not only providing these pictures show us an example, but helps the buyer and the seller enormously.

When shipping rotors are other engine parts, grease them well with lubricating oil or even vasoline. I perfer vasoline because its not messy. "SHUDD UP GUYS" Really, wrap it up in plasitc wrap and try to protect the edges with foam or more cardboard. Right fragile on the box...even though they don't give a shit, it will give some sign of relief. Remember these boxes are being shipped at like 4:00 am in the morning, would u care.

BTW: Kevin when is the gallery going to be up on your site?

these guys are lifting 20 lb boxes (if it has 2 rotors in it)

they just throw them around, they dont give a fuck.. its a shame really.. ive seen pictures of a guy who bought a 2002 grand am ram air hood, had it shipped, and the hood was destroyed by shipping.

there must be a solution to ship these fragile yet heavy things!

You'd think if you bought the rotors from somebody who had most likely owned a 7, they would've had the common knowledge of knowing how fragile rotors are?

There is a guy around here who has an engine who wants to get rid of it. I don't know if its blown but its seen the sun more than I have this summer.

dang i sent those rotors out to kevin, im sorry man ive never had that happen to me before either... ive sent about 2 or 3 sets of rotors out before and never had a problem with them.... im really surprised they turned out like that... thats the last time i send something usps ( i send it via usps cuz there only about 1/2 compared to 3 1/2 miles away...) i had those things packaged pretty well too.... sorry for the losses kevin but ill for sure make it up to you in the distant future when i get a paying job agian.... what i dont get is this... i shipped rotors to new zealand in less packaging than that and they worked out just fine.... man i'm really sorry kevin.... :( but at least you didnt go around and bad mouth me and stuff.... but it still doesnt make sense to me.... i've shipped out 2 or 3 sets of rotors that were packaged less than that.... and didnt have a problem ..... and ive sent over 35 items from car parts to glass figures and didnt have this problem..... well from now on imma double box everything i sell and shi

and also happens to be the only package i DONT insure.... :( maybe when they see an insurence label they treat it differently?

just a little FYI from the guy handling these packages at 4:00am (that's me). Packages that are packed solidly and evenly (that means the contents don't move and the weight isn't all in one corner) are almost never damaged. it is very fast paced work and 20lbs shifting inside of the box can make it leap from your hands as if it would like nothing more than to break on the concrete floor. and as kevin said, UPS shipping includes insurance so use them :) most packages sent through UPS by Private Parties (anobody without a ups business account) are also checked for packing quality to protect them from having to pay for for broken stuff because you packed it with the sunday comics.

I had a similar incident with my racingbeat downpipe/presilencer. He arrived at my door with shit hanging out everywhere, the box resembling a wet rag... Best of all, slams it on the ground as soon as i open the door.

I told him "WTF is this, I hope you know i'm filing an insurance claim, and a complaint against you" ... "well do what the f.uck you want" and walks away.

Goddamn shipping companies. Mind you, it's rather hard to damage THICK stainless steel, but i didnt appreciate the scratches.

Guys, its best to always pay the insurance. This is not like your playing blackjack and never pay it.

Also, good point from theonlygreat, if the packaging is loose damage WILL occur.

I run a company that ships over 1 million packages through UPS each year. We have had claims on less than 1/10 of 1%. It’s all in the packaging.

I'll give you a good example; I sold a wing on ebay. First I wrapped the entire wing in bubble wrap, second, I incased it in 3ml plastic and strong shipping tape.
I received an email from the person who bought it whining about how long it took him to unpack it, however, it was a successful sale in that he received an item up to his expectation.

Import, while its nice your taking responsibility, I believe you should "make it up" to Kevin immediately. Its not his fault the rotors are smashed, nor is it his fault your not working. By the pictures shown your packing job is poor. Business is business, and Kevin should get what he paid for or reimbursed.

hey kevin, this sounds stupid, but how much would you be willing to sell those dead cores? I have an art project I want to try. :) Maybe you can get some cash out of this after all

I can't believe you packed those like that. At least you owned up to your mistake. Anything heavy and fragile needs thick and solid packing (ie bubblewrap or styrofoam) which won't sift. Stuff like crumpled newspapers or styrofoam peanuts don't work on their own. The core contents need a shield of some kind of padding encasement. I worked for an airline for about a year and we handled freight from USPS. We basically threw the packages 20 feet into the inside of the cargo hold of the 73-4-57's because we had no time to stack them well (very understaffed). Fragile goods can handle that type of treatment when solidly and intelligently packed.

i've used crumpled balls of newspaper, and peanut shells. Combo of both. However i did have one problem with FedEx, as they damaged the rotor on the way back from it being milled. They reimbursed me, but it took some arguing.
