Ricers! Need your help with Hyper-Blinkers!
Is the only change for this a different flasher relay? Under $5 to buy? Where could one be bought? How fast does it cycle?

if a bulb burns out on my cavalier, they blink REALLY fast
so maybe it has to do with amperage or something... I dunno but yeah, a different relay would help. I don't know where you'd find one of those, though. |

Are you referring to a 'loud' flasher?

You bet, Scott. I just can't afford your modified dremel. You're asking too much for it, and it is used, so I figured I'd make my own.
No, a friend of mine with a 3-banger is doing an ignition tune-up. New coil, wires, plugs, etc etc. Spark plugs come in pairs, so he'll have one extra. His coil still works ok. One of the wires isn;t blown (you should see the other two). Now, seeing as how I can weld, we're going to wire a switch to the coil, and put it the spare spark plug in the exhaust, and then plumb a check valve into the exhaust so he can put straight air/fuel into the exhaust, after the cats. I figuired putting a relay into the circuit to cycle the coil on/off once or twice a second would help keep those flames going for quite a while (you know, as long as the switch is on). I know I could tap into the engine's ignition system, but he doesn' wanna touch it, so we're just taking battery power. He wants to spend no more than $10 on the project, and as long as the hyper-relay is less than that, we're golden. (i've got a spare check valve he can use: the one from my main cat) Should be good for a laugh or two. Only two other questions I would have is optimal placement of the spark plug (before or after the muffler? I'm thinking after...) and how to get the air'fuel drawn into the exhaust. I know its possible, but I haven't figured out how yet. I figured the intake was always under vacuum, thus it would try to draw in from the exhaust, instead of putting air/fuel out the intake manifold... Engine is carbed. |
if you've seen how a flasher works, its just a piece of metal with current going through it, which eventually gets hot, expands (causing the clicking sound) and makes contact another piece of metal, thus making a circuit. If you have a spare flasher try opening it up and cutting a piece off of the metal.
with any luck that means less resistence, more heat, and faster flashing. or it could fail horribly and start a fire. |

As for the fire, who cares? Its outside the car, and the system will be fused. Nothing to worry about. |
ummm i dont think you want to do it like that, especially having fuel AND AIR going into the exhaust. you want it to burn, not explode, if you get vaporized fuel with pure air around it, you will very likely blow the rear end of the car off. the reason blowing flames is possible is due to the fact that there is very little oxygen in the exhaust, causing it to burn more slowly. if you want flames just make the car run rich, but DO NOT pump air in there.

yea that whole fire thing doesn't sound like it would be worth the laughs. Except for us when we hear that the car blew up. But I don't think we want that to happen. I would stick with just doing it the old fashioned way.

Haha you guys have too much time on your hands :)

RX-7Impreza is right, the flames you get out your exhaust are not burning in the exhaust pipe itself, because there's very little oxygen left after combustion. The excess fuel in the exhaust travels down the exhaust system and is kept hot by the pipes, then explodes when it hits the oxygen rich air at the tailpipe.
|
the quick flashing blinking is from them changing to a differnt bulb not the relay well as far as i know thats all they do...
|
ummm i had to help my friend do this in his honda...i think he is a dumbass...you replace the relay to make them flash faster....BUT...on another note...i changed my rear turn signal bulbs to red on my 90 gtu...first i used the LED bulbs...shit made my blinkers flash like hyper blinkers...so i switched them out for regular red bulbs....no problem since...

getting that is illegal, so whats the point. You won't pass inspection.
|
the blinker just has to think that one of the bulbs is burnt out somehow, and it blinks fast.

Upon re-reading it, I guess he just ran the engine super rich. So.... this thing has an electric choke, which is kinda hard to make to fiddle with. Unless I just figured out the signal to it and create that when he hit the switch. That, or jet pure fuel into the exhaust. Or turn off the engine at high rpms with it floored, but cats would kinda kill the flames, and that's not much fun. Hmm.... so it looks like its the bulb. Anyone know of a relay that cycles voltage a few times a second? |
Originally posted by DuX getting that is illegal, so whats the point. You won't pass inspection. Putting a spark plug in the top of tail pipe is hard to see, for one. Two, those guys brush over the car in 3 seconds, they'd never notcie it. Three, it could easily be a wideband oxygen sensor probe, lofl. And most importantly, four: We only have tailpipe sniffer for emissions, no visual inspection, unless they hear a leak, or the car looks modified. And this is a freaking 3 banger, it does not look modified. As for point? why not? Its fun, its funny, its something to do, and it costs nothing. Better than street racing! Man, its not like we're goign to shoot it at cars or animals, or try to take down planes with it. You need to relax, guy. Put your feet up. Have a beer. Amen Sean.
My friend did that to his Ford Aspire. The car is basically a metro or Festiva. The rims are only 12 so he put some AVT tire on it for coolness, They are the speed rated expensive ones for off road racing. And did the exhaust thing with the flames. He went down to Just Norht of Corpus Cristi Texas and went to a mudding rally and won. In a little car like a metro. Thos big truck guys were pissed but impressed with that little car. Its the funniest thing I've ever seen. Charles |
