reviving dormant 13b
 

I apologize if this topic has been discussed. But I had a hard time finding anything relevant to my situation.

I have acquired a 13b engine that has been sitting dormant for who knows how long. Probably a great many years. I don't expect it to work. But who the hell knows, right? What is the right way to proceed here? Anyway I can test the engine by manually turning it over before I put it in the 90 fc vert? Grease the wheels so to speak? It has been sitting out of a vehicle probably for its entire dormancy. The transmission is still attached. Probably has never been separated from the engine. Also, is there any way to identify whether it's an s4 or s5 na?

Id try turning over slowly hopefully its not seized. Ife hears atf can help but id start with just alil oil in the exhaust ports. I beliege atf can do slight damage if left inside for a period of time

Use MMO

if you don't plan on rebuilding it then just throw it in and either see if it fires or attach a chain to a truck and tow it until it grenades or works.

Gonna grab some mmo and give it a go saturday morning.

Use MMO or engine oil. Don't use ATF, it damages the soft seals.

Don't try to turn it over until you've filled it with oil and let it sit a bit. Then slowly try to work it free, you might also want to check the apex seals through the exhaust ports..maybe spray a bit of penetrant on them and try to move them in and out.

I revived my 86 GXL last year after sitting for close to 11 years. I had known about atf since the 90's but on the advice of a mechanic friend of mine I used the MMO. It worked great! I slowly turned the motor after letting it sit for 2 days. It slowly turned and was not seized. I would then turn it every day after work for about a week( I was waiting on parts for the resurrection so I had time) I could hear the compression build and get stronger every day. I've now been driving the car since May of last year.

So I got the engine on the stand and remove the transmission. I gave the flywheel a little spin and the fan in the front turned, smooth as silk. Is this a sufficient test?

I didn't use anything. Should I go ahead put some MMO in there anyways? I have not checked the seals through the exhaust port yet. Is spraying some MMO in there moot now?

Also, I attached to the stand using the best advice I could find which was the three bolts on the PS bracket. Is this sufficient? I may just be overly worried. Thx guys.
