Reverse gear wont go in!!!

Hi. so after having a friend test drive my car, my reverse gear wont go in now. It feels like as if it is locked. Something like when your car is moving, and youre trying to throw it back in first, its blocked off. How do I go about thios?! Any help would be appreciated.

I dont know if it matters, but I have 87' TII

Stupid question, but have you tried pumping the clutch a few times to allow the gears to spin a bit? Moved the car forward a little?

evoentertainment 06-12-10 06:56 AM

yes i have, ive even had a buddy if mine push the car as I was trying to get the car in reverse. anyone else have any idea? should i think about rebuild or just get a new tranny?

Can you get the car in 5th gear? 5th and reverse use the same shift rod.

Friends don't let friends drive their FC's..... :)

A hard time getting into fifth and or reverse is a symptom of the shifter plasctic bushings crumbling and the broken pieces getting in the way. So take the shifter out and clean out the opening thoroughly and try again. Not a rebuild problem or some magic transmission oil fix. The mechanism is just FODed.

Im sorry, i forgot to state that I have no problem getting into to 1-5th. Its not that I have a hard time getting in reverse, its that I CANT get into reverse at all.

@Hailers, so if the mechanism is "foded" how do I go about it? Sorry, I have very very mechanically inclined.

Follow hailers recommendation, most likely your shifter bushings need to be replaced any ways ( try mazdatrix). So replace those (unless you know they're new) and go from there.

HAILERS 06-13-10 12:19 PM

MAZDATRIX has a FAQ showing how to remove the shifter.

Remove shifter and clean out the area below it.

Sometimes this can help when reverse can't be gotten into: First shift into another gear. Try fifth then reverse or fourth and then reverse. Try several times. Even try it with the engine off til you succeed.

FOD is just a Gov't term (airforce term) for foreign object damage). Much like crawling up the inlet on a F-111 to do a preflight inspection of the fan blades. Then Joe Smoe calles you and says your needed on the telephone. So you set your flashlight down so you can turn around in the inlet.........crawl out and anser the phone. Girl friend calls to tell you she's just withdawn all your dough out of the bank and is catching a plane to Vegas with her boyfriend. At this moment in time you forget all about the mirror and flashlight in the inlet and like a dumbass sign off on the preflight.

Pilot and his WSO climb into the jet and start 'er up. Gee. A bit of a rumble on number one engine and the TIT is off a bit. Cancel flight plan and get out and go to the officers club to get smashed.
ON post flight insp finds traces of a flahlight battery on the ramp behind the jet. Hmmmm. FODed the engine. Now who signed off on that blade insp???????? Six million buck TF-30-P-100 just a piece of crap now. Not to mention the career of the flt line mechanic. Real story except the part about the girl friend on the phone. No idea who it was.

I've got the same problem. Took it to Mazda and they said something was stuck on the inside. Ended up just buying a new tranny. Hope that helps!

evoentertainment 06-14-10 05:21 PM

ok... i got really frustrated yesterday, just slammed it in reveres, it went in, but my shifter broke off... but i can drive in reveres now. so i guess something was stuck in there? any thought in this guys?

ps i really appreciate all the input! thanks guys!

Vortes 06-14-10 05:59 PM

Everyone having this problem, please try putting your shifter in 5th and then shifting down into reverse, whenever i've had this problem, this worked first or second try.
