Rev Limiter @ 7800?
 

My car always cuts out when I hit 7800 rpms. When I'm not moving and just revving it (in gear and not in gear) it won't cut out. I'm not sure if it's cutting fuel or spark. It's a N/A so cutting fuel isn't a big a deal as it is in a turbo. Aaanyways, I've tried my 88 ECU and an ECU from an 87. Same thing.

The thing is, another guy I know w/ a 90 engine but 86 ECU can go to 9krpm. My motor's has the 89-91 rotors and it's balanced, so it can take the high rpm, but for some reason, the computer is cutting it.

Any ideas of what sensors to check? I'm thinking this might be related to my lack of power problem.

Well my 91NA with stock computer has a limiter @ 8600 or so (maybe 8400rpms).

86-88s have a built in rev limiter that limits RPMs to 7800. It may be defeatable, but I don't know how.

Why does this bother you?

The car really has no power revving that high, unless you're showing off how high you can rev your motor...

I see peak power at about 7200 or so..... I usually do not rev that high, though.

You need to find a salvage yard with a 89-91 cannibal and grab the ECU & MAF.

While your engine may be balanced for those high revs, still be careful.. Alternators and water pumps may not like it. Specifically, I think the water pump starts to cavetate at 6500 or so... Also, extremely high revs puts a lot more centripital force on the apex seals, potentially causing higher wear...

If the clutch DOES explode when you're revving, there is a fair chance that it could go and chop your legs off.

Thanks for the replies...just to follow up:

1. I know that stock motors stop making power well before 7800 or 8k, but my motor is streetported and it still pulls all the way to 7800. I know about the water-pump issues and such, but I'm not real worried about it. Hey, if it breaks, I'll replace it.
2. The 89-91 MAF and ECU is a good idea, but it's my understanding that the plugs on the ECU are different, so the stock 88 wiring harness won't fit.

Thanks again. I just thought that maybe somehow this is related to my overall lack of power. WOT I never see more than maybe 1 green bar on my A/F meter. Shouldn't I see full rich (or at least closer to full rich than where I'm at).
