replacing front diff mount

Hi gang,
On my '87 TII restoration project, I was planning to replace the front differential mount today. In the FSM, it looks pretty straight forward. (I traded a computer for the mount, and a salvage transmission at a local rotary repair shop.)

Now, I've got the car jacked up in the air and crawled under to get started. Yowch! It looks like I may have to disassemble most of the rear suspension and exhaust just to get the broken one out. That true? Or, can you replace it with everything in place?

I'm thinking that if I have to disassemble all that stuff, I will wait till I'm ready to swap the trannys. No sense doubling the work, huh?

Anyway, I'd appreciate any input you veterans would have on this part of the project.

From what I remeber when I got mine done was that the rear suspension had to be lowered.

There were two different kind of mounts. One was kinda like an 'L' shaped that goes on the center and that can be replace by just lower suspension and diconnecting the drive shaft.

The other one are 2 round mounts. This is more work since the entire diff has to come out. Then hammer out the old ones and machine press the new ones in.

Have fun... :)

That's the one I have. So, how does one lower the suspension? Is there, perhaps, a thread/page on it?

THX!

Thank you, Thank you!!

This is exactly what I was looking for. Somehow, the search couldn't find it. *sheesh*

I spent like an hour doing mine, didn't have to take any suspension or exhaust out. All I did was loosen up the stuff in the way to have it sag a little but still stay in, and then I used a ratchet/socket combo with about 4 extensions on it and went from the side. Worked perfectly just was kind of hard to get the new one in there without being able to see.

Thanks to all for your input. I've finished installing the replacement mount. Took 5 hrs - I was taking my time...no hurry. The ugliest part was getting the exhaust out. After that, no big deal.
I would however add that having two jacks was helpful in putting the new mount in. I had a floor jack to maneuver the sub-frame and a small cylinder-type jack to move the differential up & down. That made it pretty easy to get everything to line back up when bolting stuff back together.

Thanks, again, everyone. Oh... did I mention, it drives WAY better!!!

(and hey, ddub...you're a better man than I am Gunga Din. No way I coulda' done it in an hour)
