Renesis Spark Plugs in a 13B (NA or Turbo)
Has anyone looked into what plugs Mazda is using on the new Renesis Engine. I've come up with the part numbers:
NGK RE7A-L and RE9B-T Has the Renesis 13B plug been redesigned any from standard 13B Plug? Does the Renesis use Platinum or Iridium plugs? |
Yes, i've been browsing the RX-8 forum... Mazda TSB about Sparkplugs for the RX-8:

Unless im missing something, what is to gain from running RX8 plugs? I really don't think it's worth it, but then again im probably missing some important fact :D!

AFAIK the Reni plugs are Irridium (sp?)
|
But doesn't NGK make iridium plugs that we KNOW fit in the 13B? Or is my forgetfull mind thinking of something else ;)?
|
uh they make platinum ones for sure. And IIRC the new plugs are NGK too.
|
BUR9EQ-P, BUR7EQ-P are the platinum ones.

So I guess the jury is still out on this one. I've been to two stores so far looking for plugs for an RX-8... No dice. They are a special order with an undetermined wait time. The only place to get them is the dealer. |
I just got back from the dealer and checked out some RX-8 plugs.
Apparently they look like the race plugs RB runs in their peripheral port motors. It's running a pretty big gap too! They retail 260cdn for a set. |
The Iridium plugs are built by ND and the Part # are IRE01-27 for the leading and IRE01-31 for the trailing.

damn........sux to own a new car.......That is another reason y I cannot own a new car....yet
|
Those are expensive for new plugs.
Now, if you say this can work with the older cars - as i'm unaware - are the plug wires the same, or are they different (from ours)? |
Damn those are expensive, but what did you expect they did to get 238hp out of a non-turbo 13B?
|
holy bejeezus! That's waaaay too much for 4 sparkplugs.
|
$33US per plug at the local store here
|
Sonic -- are you getting those while they're in stock? None of the stores around here have them in stock and you have to special order them. I have yet to beable to comfirm a price on them yet.... they told me they wouldn't know until they get them in the store.
 |
What about thread size? Thread length? Shaft length? Remember this isn't just a 13B with a p-port, this is a totally redesigned engine. We don't know if the thread size is different, if the shaft is longer, causing the plug to stick out, and hit a seal, or if the thread length is long enough. We need to know this first before we can start want to pay 33 bucks for 1 spark plug. Also is there any difference in leading trailing as far as how cold or hot i.e. trailings on 13bt are 9's while the leading are hotter at 7.

They might come down in price. The cars are new, so nobody should be needing plugs already.
How much of a difference does the spark plug make? spark comes from the coil, so you would think that upgrading the coil/ignitor would be a bigger benefit than upgrading the plugs. |
Platinum plugs are only used by manufacturers because they last far longer than normal plugs, so they can extend the service intervals. It has nothing to do with performance. In fact older plugs work a bit better than platinum ones. The high initial cost is spread over a longer period of time.
