removing TII engine, pull trans or leave it?

some of the writeups I've read say to pull the engine and trans together, while others say to unbolt it on the car and leave the transmission, which is easier? and why on some is it reccomended to pull them together on the T2?

jacobcartmill 01-14-04 04:40 PM

we pulled my NA engine/trans out together and put the turboII engine/trans in together. you just need someone back there to pull/push the tail of the trans down so it will clear the firewall. dont do it without atleast 2 people.

SpeedFreak03 01-14-04 04:42 PM

I've never done it, but I think it would be easier to leave them bolted together when u pull it out. Just my opinion tho.

no
its easier to pull it all at once...seriously

its not hard

but be sure to have atleast 2 people...i would suggest atleast 3 to be honest
one to pull the hoist back
one to guide the tranny
and one to watch the whole process to make sure its not hanging on anything while taking it out of the engine bay

Fitness... That's exactly what I did pulling both of my engines, and what I plan to do putting the turbo back in. ;) Worked like a charm, except that I forgot to leave the intake manifolds all bolted up. Try pulling a short block hanging off a tranny with only the front chain hook! We got a little creative with that one, for sure.

most definately pull them out together, i've pulled my motor three times now and have it down to a science. a friend of mine pulled my motor/trans out by himself in 3 hours.

DUDE! Engine and trans TOGETHER! MUCH EASIER!

Philip_g 01-15-04 05:04 AM

I think the together's have it :)
Ok, that's the way I'll do it then.

I'm just pulling things apart to remove the engine for rebuild now, I don't know why but I'm more worried about pulling the engine than the rebuild itself, should be the other way around, shouldn't it? :o:

it is not really easier to pull both than to pull just the engine, in my experience. but when putting the two back in, tranny + engine at the same time is the way to go.

BigTone 01-15-04 09:04 AM

WAY easier to pull the engine and trans out together. I have done it quite a few time and it is without a doubt easier. Good luck.

hpram99 01-15-04 11:55 AM

I voted for pulling it seperate from the tranny, just because it only had one vote. Votes need friends too!

I'm pulling out my engine/tranny as well as one. Just seems easier. Mating the engine to the tranny thats in the car is a real PITA.

jreynish 01-15-04 01:46 PM

I have done it 6 times already on my own and others cars, it is way faster and easier to pull the engine and leave tranny! Have done both ways and timmed them it took me 1/2 hour longer to pull with tranny!

SpeedFreak03 01-15-04 02:26 PM

yea but its a bitch to mate the motor to the tranny in the car!!! I think even if it takes longer its worth it if its easier.

mazpower 01-15-04 02:28 PM

The multiple times I have removed FC engines, I've always yanked just the engine. I can do it alone and in under 3 hours. I have also done the engine/tranny yank on a 240SX, it seemed to be more work and a PITA.

DelSlow 01-15-04 03:27 PM

i yanked my NA motor by disconnecting the trans, and put a T2 in its place with no problems at all. definatly need two people, one to control the hoist, the other to line up the engine with the trans. took me about 5 min to line up the splines, so i dont know why it would be easier to take the trans out too.

HAILERS 01-15-04 03:40 PM

leave it

Takes me all of maybe fice minutes to get the engine lined up with the tranny and the motor mounts!
First time took me ten with my dad helping hold the hoist steady!
