Twist it as hard as you can.

If it has never been removed it will be on tight. To be on the safe side and give and unnecessary sense of security, secure the post and simply turn the knob counter clockwise. Its that simple. Should easily unscrew. Have done so twice.

It should be a little tight but it simply screws off the end of the shift lever if its the OEM knob. Grab the knob with your right hand and rotate the knob with the top going toward the passenger side. Once you get the knob off the shifter you'll see how heavy it is, it acts as a counter weight to make shifting easier, and there is little danger of you breaking something.

If the threads have rusted together for some reason you might have to take the shifter out of the car turn it upside down and soak the threads with a penetrating oil to loosen things up. Just snap the shift boot base off the center console and pull it as far up as you can to give yourself as much room as possilbe to remove the shifter.

Just remember a rotary car needs to challenge its driver to see just how smart, committed, and innovative you are. This is a test, its only a test and you can again make your car proud of you by figuring out a way of passing its challenge.
