Removing inner tie rods+ outer tie rods
 

hey all, ive searched but i havnt found any clear guide or discription on howto remove the inner tie rods. id like to replace these and get adjustable tie rod ends from AWR. can anyone tell me what to do once the boot is off the inner tie rod? also, just for the future, does anyone know howto remove the outer tie rods? i saw the nut on it and played with it, but it seems stuck on. it also seems the nut acts as a fasener, but i dont know how the outer tie rod itself is attached. i also looked in the service manual but they dont mention the inner tie rods or say how the outer tie rods are attached. please help. thanks

For the outter tie rod, the shaft is a tight press fit into the steering knuckle. After you remove the nut, you have to either use a "pickle fork" to seperate the tie rod from the knuckle, or, you can use a 2-arm puller (the sort of thing you'd use to remove a hub or a stuck-on brake disc) to push the shaft out.

To take out the inner and the outer tie rod ends you first loosen the jam nut and turn the inner tie rod, they are usually pretty stuck. You may have to use a monkey wrench. Loosen the nut on the outer tier rod end ball joint and seperate the ball joint. You can use a puller or just bang at the knuckle with a hammer. Twist off the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod and remove the jam nut. Remove the boot from the rack. Turn the steering wheel to get more space to get remove the inner tie rod. You probally dont have the special tool or the right size wrench to remove the inner tie rod so just use a monkey wrench. You want to grab the square end of the inner tie rod and not the rack. Between the inner tie rod and the rack is a lock washer, make sure you install it properly and use loctite on the inner tie rod(rack side) and to bend the tab at the end. On the awr site, it says "Adjustable tie rods with 1/2" rod ends. Made to fit our own modified steering rack"
