removing exhaust sleeves

does anyone know how to remove N/A exhaust sleeves from the rotor housings? is there certain tools required or just your average toolbox tools and pull the little pins on the side out. I was told i was supposed to spot weld the pins on the side and then use needle nose pliers to take them out. Any information would help.

Using this thread method I managed to get both sleeves out. Try it before using the spot welder.

there were no pictures on that link for some reason

It's just like pulling a nail out of a block of wood with a hammer. You just have to put something between the hammer/crowbar so you won't damage the housing.

those ports are there for a reason: now when you bolt the manifold to the motor, the rotor housings have bigger ports than the manifold. you should have used a drill and grinding heads to smooth out the inside of the rotor exhaust inserts. it will run better that way. now you will have back pressure buildup.

i am putting turbo2 sleeves instead because they don't have that diffuser looking thing inside them like the NA exhaust sleeves do

could you send me that link again i went back to look at it but it said there was an error

Glad I could help. The procedure is a bit of a pain in the butt but it does work. Other than spot-welding, I know of no other way to do this. For the longest time, it was a real thorn in my side.

Other than port matching, what is the purpose of those sleeves/diffusers?

I'm not using the stock manifold, I have an RB header. Are there power gains to be had by removing them?

There are no pics in the links above. I assume the engine needs to be torn apart to get them out?

Since there is no turbo to quiet a N/A, the diffusers were designed to damp the sound waves.

That's a great pic to explain the purpose of the NA sleeves. If I am porting a NA engine (large street or bridge) I have made more power without the defuser. I never take them out. The port timing is the same as the TII. Just the TII doesn't have the "wings". This is what you can do with the NA sleeves. If you are wanting to open them up with the engine still together, you can mod them.

That's kinda contradictory...

You make more power without the diffuser but you don't take them out?

No, though his post is a little un-clear, what hes saying is he doesn't remove the sleeve and replace them with TII sleeves, he simply leaves the N/A sleeves in and grinds the wings/defusers out.

hate to bring this up from the dead, but I'm about to port my engine. It's n/a, and I read that you cant port exhaust ports on n/a because of the inserts. Should I change them to t2 inserts or perhaps do what bad 83 did then port it?

arghx 04-17-10 05:56 AM

You can grind them out. Be advised that it makes the exhaust louder and more harsh, especially when combined with a header.

When I read "Why NOT to Port a 6-Port Exhaust" at Mazdatrix, I interpret that as saying you CAN port w/o removing the diffuser, it’s just a pita.

I'm in the same position as EvilWankel and looking for advice.
a) grind out the diffuser and enlarge the port.
b) grind out the diffuser but leave the port alone
c) leave the diffuser and still enlarge the port
d) leave the whole thing alone
I'm tempted to leave both the exhaust and intake stock, but since the engine is apart I have a chance to street port the intake.

I'd like to learn y'alls opinion on intake porting w/o exhaust porting on the S5 N/A.
Thanks,
~j

Completely removing mistake, swaping to open chamber "GOOD" you need a dowel punch set and hammer.

So if u remove them it makes them sound ruffer nice
