Removing carpet/insulation without removing dash?

I really don't feel like removing my dashboard if I don't have to. I'm trying to get the last bits of carpet and rubberized sound deadening out of the interior so I can get the interior painted. I don't know if the dash'll need to come out later for painting but for now, is there an easy way to yank out that last bit of carpet behind the dash without taking it out? I've tried taking a knife and going to town on it but I still can't get it all out.

Not sure, but you're right on that taking out that dash is an all-day project, a real pain in the butt.

you could cut as much of it away as it would take to hide it.

you plannin on replacing it with a different color carpet or are you leavig the carpet out all together?

I'm leaving the carpet out; turning it into a track car. I read on another thread that it only takes about 30mins to remove, but it looks like it'd take a lot longer. Maybe I'll tackle it on a day when I'm feeling gutsy

Dash is like 6 bolts. takes all of 45 minutes to remove.

McKensy(sp) had a good writeup on how to remove the dash

We ought to have a contest amongst rotary guys to see you can remove the engine/dash/whatever the fastest.

RRTEC says he can do the dash in 45 minutes, can anyone top that?

Seriously though, you can't take the whole carpet out without removing the dash. It is a little bit more involved than 6 bolts...8 bolts, and a few screws, and the steering wheel...oh, and dont forget the speedometer cable.

I don't think I can beat 45 minutes. Maybe an hour tops for me.

+1. just pull it out, no big deal. i think its 10 bolts. 2 by each door, 2 on the sides by where your feet go, 2 to drop the steering column

45 minutes with out cracking anything...

hmmmm

dash is easy to pull, and you CAN remove the carpet without removing the dash, there is a pin (i think) right under the center vent unit so you have to kinda shimmy the carpet to dislodge it, but it is possible i've done it twice this way. Removing the dash truley isnt that hard though, just keep track of where everything goes.

Hahaha, all day? No way. Hell I can do it faster than 45 minutes as well. Its easy to pull the dash, I dont know why people are so afraid of it. Its childs play. I know someone who would rather pull an engine than a dash. Its only like 13 bolts and a few screws.

where is the write up on removing it?....

Omixeo 02-05-07 04:20 PM

In the archives.

MazterDizazter 02-06-07 04:24 PM

"They're in the archives!" Sorry, obscure James Bond reference... Yeah, I think I can handle it... steering wheel and seats are already out so it shouldn't be bad.
