Removing belts make much difference?
i hear a lot about removing the PS and AC and only leaving the alternator assembly intact. i figure it frees up the motor a lot but i just wanted to know if it is worth not being able to have the ac and more importantly the power steering since i like hitting the twisties.
and i was curious about wheels sizes... i'm going for about a 1-1.5 inch drop and was thinking if 16s would be big enough to fill the wheel well a bit more. i'm rollin' on stock 14s haha. thanks everyone. :icon_tup: |
im wondering the same thing i hear you can gain about 5-6 HP from removing each one (PS and AC) do you know if they are both connected im thinking of dropping just the AC if possible

the only thing you would notice is if you either did an under drive pully set up or the weight loss if you completely remove the power steering and ac. also 16s will fill the wheel well up plenty. i have my stock vert rims on(15s) and they fill the wheel well good, dont know how much my car is droped though, i have tein coil overs.

yeah, removing all that ac crap will take a little weight off, and very small amounts of power may be had. but it will be unnoticeable. in reality, it mainly makes working on the car a ton easier.

I removed air pump ,all ac stuffs,power steering on my old TII,
only lost a few pounds , I didn't feel any power gain . the only mods I feel noticeable power gain was boost controller. |
if you do remove everything but the alternator, you will need to invest in a dual alternator belt pulley, or else the water pump is going to slip, and you can figure out the rest from there.

Also, if you leave only the alternator belt in place you don't HAVE to run two belts for the alternator as long as you are running electric fans and not the clutch fan. I have my T2 setup like this and I have never had any problems with the water pump not spinning properly.

I remove the P/S and A/C, and I'd do again in a heartbeat. Of course, I don't need the A/C in a vert, but I love the feeling of the non powered steering, much better feel for the road. Having a much less crowded engine bay is also well worth it.

yeah i like having my a/c. the summers have been getting hotter here in southern cali. it seems like it's easy enough to take off the powersteering belt. just the one tensioner and that's it, so i think i might do that and see how i like the feel of the car. i've also noticed a little bit of electrolisis on the top inlet of my radiator so i think i'm going to go with a new aluminium radiator and electric fan. every cold start my fan sounds like a F-14 flying overhead. seems like it holds the motor back a little... we'll see. thanks everyone

If you only have 1 belt in contact with the water pump, it will probably slip. Therefore, it doesn't matter how many or what type of fans you have. You need to have at least 2 belts in contact with it regardless of fan setup.
The dual pully is a simple install anyway. |
