Removed Engine to clean and paint engine bay. Wont Start on reinstall.

Hey brehs,

I have an s4 na that I pulled the engine on last week to replace the tranny and paint the engine bay while it was out. I got it back in and it wont start. It will crank and turn over but I think I am getting no gas. All the lines are plugged up and nothing backwards.

I have used starting fluid and it will run on it so I know I have air and spark.

I have about four wires near the fuel filter that arent hooked up to anything and cant figure where they go with the exception of the oil pressure sending unit.

Does the wire to the fuel pump run under the car or thru the body? I dont remember.

Also when I jumper the fuel pump connector on my s5 it makes this loud noise and you can hear the fuel flow thru the fuel rail.

When I do it on the s4 I can hear a click but no flo noise. I know this is something simple. Thanks-

Derek

so this is the s4 you are trying to run? did you can try to start the engine with the fuel pump connector jumpered? or did you just jumper it once to see if you can hear anything?

if you can't hear fuel flowing with the fuel pump check connector jumpered, there is no ground getting to the circuit opening relay. There is a brown wire on connector FEM-02 (one of the big connectors between the dash harness and the engine/emissions harness). That connects the AFM and diagnostic connector to the circuit opening relay. Is this an engine swap? I'm confused.

Sorry man. I have a few FC's

This is my s4. I simply pulled the engine and tranny out of a running car to swap the tranny and paint the engine bay and do a reinstall.

When I jumper the fuel pump OR push the flapper door on the AFM I hear the same click noise but not the loud flow of fuel that I hear when I jumper the connector on my s5.

I also have a few connectors loose that didnt look like they go to anything near the ecu when I unplugged the harness. All the ECU connectors are plugged in and the two that arent have dust on them or tape leading me to think they were never plugged into anything.

It sounds like there is something allowing the fuel to want to flow as I can hear a click, but it isnt loud and you can barely hear fuel flow compared to the s5 na.

The simple test.
Go to the engine, and Pull the Line off from the Fuel filter.(runs to the Primary rail).
If you Turn the key and get Gas there.(be careful it is 40 psi,.so it will GUSH.)then just make sure that your Fuell ine IS going to the Primary rail.if not switch them.
Now,the only Real Connectors at the Passenger side around the Front Corner of the car are AFM,Variable Resistor and the RESISTOR Pack(big Roundish type connector 5 wires).
If the Afm is not plugged in,it will start and Die,,IF the Resistor pack is not plugged in,it won't start. Period.

Series four turbo? or non turbo?

HAILERS 09-22-09 08:37 PM

The series four TURBO car has a fuel pump/resistor relay package in front of the air filter assy. Unlike the non turbo series four that does not have this package.

The power goes thru the circuit opening relay then to the fuel pump resistor relay package in front of the afm/airfilter, then to the fuel pump on a TURBO car.

It's gotta be plugged in on a turbo car.

this is an s4 na. AFM is plugged in and when i am using the starter fluid it runs past 4k rpm. Should i really hear the fuel? Ill take the lines off and check for pressure. I will also take pics of the stuff that is unplugged by the tranny.

Did to check to see if you have any codes?

Dltreezan 09-23-09 07:52 AM

it beeps twice when i try to roll start it. Whatever that means.

Sounds like fuel pressure to me... especially since it runs on the starter fluid... have you checked the fuel pressure yet?

IF the yellow two socket fuel pump check connector is jumpered and key On, then yes, you should hear the fuel passing thru the fuel rails all the time the key is on. Or go to the gas cap and remove it and listen for the pump running. Should be.

Last time I looked, you turn the key to ON............the ENGINE fuse powers the MainRelay and the circuit opening relay......the circuit opening relay pulls in and the ENGINE fuse now feeds the fuel pump.

Or you turn the key ON......engine fuse powers the positve side of one of the circuit opening relays coils..........you jumper the two socket, yellow fuel pump check connector and that feeds a ground to that same relays coil......coil pulls in and makes a circuit for the ENGINE fuse to feed the fuel pump............OR you turn the key to On.........shove the series four afm vane aft at least a 1/8".......that makes a ground circuit to the relay just mentioned and the relay closes and feeds the fuel pump power from the ENGINE fuse.

The free online wiring diagrams show the circuit being in the FRONT harness and the REAR harness with the exception of the ground signal from the AFM/YELLOW two socket check connector being in the EM harness which connects to the Front harness on the passengers side of the car interior foot well.

yeah I think I am hearing the relay click when i do all that and no fuel. Something stupid for sure. The fuel noise is not audible at all like the s5 is. I guess that means the fuel pump is not coming on.

Might have the fuel lines AT the engine crossed. Pull off the hose that comes from the fuel filter. Put the key to START for say three/four seconds, then look and see if the removed hose poured fuel on the ground or into the bottle you put it in so it would not splash on the ground.

If fuel did not come out that line from the fuel filter, then crank the engine for ten seconds and look for fuel. NO fuel means the pump isn't working for sure.

You could then pull the circuit opening relay out of its base and set it to the side. The make a jumper wire. Jumper the large black/white wire to the Blue/red wire and the pump should run if the key is to ON.

ON a USA car, the line off the fule filter goes to the front hard line on the engine and the return to the aft hardline on the engine.
