Relocating Battery - help needed Identifying wire running of Main Fuse line
 

I don't believe this has been asked before. I have looked at the FSM and I have no Engine In the Bay to confirm this one Black Female Prong Connector that has been spliced In the Main Fuse wiring from the factory.

If you follow the Alternator power wire (running off the L Post of course :) ) and track It down, you will see It branching off the Main Fuse wiring. To be exact - It can be found 10 inches down from the lug connector from the Main Fuse. Again, It's a single prong black female connector.

Quite simply, It can be found 10 inches down from the lug connector from the 80amp Main Fuse.

My only concern Is whats It's purpose. I have ridded many components over the years and this Is all the more bit of a freeze with the Engine Bay completely stripped.

is it about 8/ 10 gage wire? can't tell ya what it does (besides carry some good amps), just that mine's connected ('88SE) and runs from the battery harness to the left side engine harness...hope that helps a little...
If I had to guess, it's a ground for several components...

Yes, It's almost, If not the same, guage as the wires leading Into the Main Fuse. The big kicker Is that the other end of the single prong black female connector wire (when unwrapped from the tape being 6" long) Is crimped on the wire leading Into the 80amp Fuse. Thus It's powered, not grounded.

so it powers something BEFORE it gets to the fuse box? can't find it in the FSM, huh? now you got me curious

from what I'm seeing in the wiring manual, it looks like it powers the battery hot circuit, and I don't see a seperate fuse for it...

Exactly. I've noticed some other WTF's? as well when I looked at the FSM.

That is (I believe) the primary power connector for the main fuse box in the driver's side area. Remember that the main fuse box does not pass through the engine bay fuse box. MAIN is for the main relay, it is not the MAIN fuse, IIRC. But I don't have my manual to check right now. I did completely strip both harnesses down to re-wrap them and I haven't finished it yet so I'll try to check tonight when I go back out there.

IMO, the gage looks too small for it to be the cabin fuse box's sole power supply; besides, on the FSM power diagram, there's a wire that splits from the cable goin to the main fuse box and runs to the (hot) battery circuit..it's the very first wiring diagram in the '88 FSM

Okay. I found It. :)

The Driverside Engine Harness branches and makes It's way up to the Main Fuse Box. However, about 2" from the Main Fuse Box Itself, there Is a cluster of Harness Plugs that makes It's way out. These are for the P/S & A/C connections. I disassembled that ages ago...Is It not for the A/C (single prong black female connector)? And the other 2 White Plugs for the P/S, or something like that? It's been awhile.

At this point, It would be good to know what It Is, why does It receive a direct crimp, and If I should Incorporate this wire with the relocation of the Battery.

silverrotor, take a look at the "power" page of the FSM wiring manual- it'll give you a good idea of all the main power circuit branching going on, that way when you do the battery relocation, if something's not working (like the couple of items that battery hot circuit powers), you'll know where to route the new wiring to power it.... cheers...
