Reliability of rebuilt engines?
 

Hi, im looking at this 89 FC...

new paint job
new rebuilt engine (3k miles) - also new belts, air pump, oil lines, etc...
new clutch
Greddy Trust cat back
Mazdaspeed seat
Eibach Proline with KYB 8 way adjustable (3k mile)
Project Mu B-Force brake pads (3k miles)
good treads on tires
116k miles currently
wiper switch, turn signal, headlight switch, clock are all in excellent working condition, under 70k miles.
The car was set up for SCCA E-Stock. Lots of potential.
asking $5000.00
(add 500 for big brake kit)

and i was just wondering how reliable the rebuilt engine would/should be? also, the car itself has over 100k miles, which for me is a bit high, because i dont want to have that many unnecessary problems if i can avoid it.

so basically is the car with over 100k miles still good with a rebuilt enegine with 3k miles? and is $5000 too much? any input would be great. thanks

wow where in ca are u...thats a great deal..VERY GOOD..esp if the paint job is clean..and a good paint job..hows the interior? for an s5with a rebuild i think thats great..i got my 88turbo II wit 124k...no rebuold but good compression for 4800..my frined got his s5 turbo II 89....wit 114000 miles..no rebuild all stock for 4600..i say u have a great deal..if u dont want it..gimme details.:)

Well, there are rebuilts where only the seals are changed... Not saying that's bad as long as the housing were good, but just like piston engines different terms for rebuilt. Check and see what was done and who did it. If it was the owner, find out what he replaced. Shouldn't be any problems, if it was done properly. I'd rather have a rebuilt engine, rather than one with 116,000 miles which may need a rebuild in 30/40,000 miles.....Or before. I'd say price is about right if paint, interior, and drivetrain in excellent condition. Check trans for any grinding (syncros), 1st to 2nd, and esp. when you come down from 4th to 2nd at a higher RPM. Make sure all emisson contols,cats, on so it will pass inspection.

How long do you need it to last?

If the body is rust free, then it will last as long as you keep it that way, simple as that. The body has lasted 14 years and should last many more depending on how its cared for.

Wash it and wax it frequently.

If there is minor rust, get it fixed correctly. :)

FYI-My '89TII has 160,000 miles and people that don't know the 7's believe it's a new car. Never in rain, snow, no dents, dings,rust. Should last a lot longer, 'cause I'm not getting rid of it, enjoy it too much. The car won't disintegrate after so many years. They are built extremely well.

I have about 5,000 miles on my streetport/rebuild and it runs fine. I replaced all seals and gaskets, and re-used the housing. My motor was running fine though when I tore it down too, so the rebuild wasnt too bad. It runs fine, strong as ever.

5K is not a bad price for that car with those parts, since it pretty much has a new motor and paint, including many aftermarket parts.

I think it depends on who does the rebuild. some people will blow a coolant seal and just do a quick rebuild that wont last just so the car runs good and they can sell it
