release bearing question
 

ok.... I've had a problem with mine on my '87 n/a but now I'm looking to buy an '87TII. The problem is it has a stuck release bearing. So.... i was wondering, could i just spray some degreaser or something in there through the hole where the starter goes. It should loosen up the grease. I just need it to last long enough to get it home about 10 miles away. I just want to know if it is going to mess up the tranny in any way if i do this. If i have to i will just tow it but i would much rather drive it out of there. Any other suggestions?? Thanks in advance

From what I have seen, if the release bearing sticks - the pressure plate fingers get destroyed.
Are the clutch hydraulics working?

i believe they are.... I know the pilot bearing is probably shot but to fix these things i need to get it home. I'm pretty sure that the pilot bearing will last another 10 miles. I'm just wondering if the degreaser will solve my problem for now and not mess up the tranny.

opps... miss read ur post..... im not sure about pressure plate fingers but i know that im not gonna drive it until i put in a light weight flywheel and upgraded clutch. Again... these are things i need it home to get done.

If pilot bearing shot, frozen, you won't be able to shift because the trans will keep turning with the engine, It won't slow down. Could cause problems with the gears/syncros. If the release brg is frozen, it will ride on the pp and dig through the fingers when you disengage the clutch. If it's a direct drive home, get engine warm while in neutral. Shut it off, get a push, put it in 3rd or 4th, ignition on, pop clutch and drive it ome without shifting.
If you know there are problems have it towed and then no worries.

Top up the clutch reservoir and pump up the hydraulics.
Shoot some motorcycle chain lube at the release bearing and see if that works.
