regearing for the freeway
 

i have a 94 toyota truck 2WD with 17inch rims and 205/40/17 tires. the truck has an 88 rx7 rearend in it which i believe to be out of a 5 speed and have 4.10 gear ratio. my stock rearend was 3.72 and and even with that gearing my engine was revving a little high on the freeway with the tire size above. now that i have put the mazda rearend in its really straining the motor to keep up with traffic because the rpms are so high.

my question is are there any companies that make a new gear set for this rearend that would give me a lower gear ratio than 3.72. i realize the automatics came with a 3.90 stock but i would like to get to at least 3.72, or lower if possible. any help would be appreciated.

ummmmmmmmmmmmm..........interesting question........I would be interested in something similar for the miata.....damn thing is at 4K RPMs at 80MPH

so im not the only 1 with this problem huh.

no sir.........I have thought about swapping out the tranny/rear end off a NEWER miata which would make the gears slightly taller.....enough to make a difference between 4K and at least 3K RPMs

what about just buying a 6 speed replacement?

All the aftermarket rearend gearsets to my knowledge are higher ratios, 4.33 and up. Some even go into the 5's. No one but the v8 crowd wants less than 3.9.

Try some larger tires/wheels on the driveaxle. Thats the redneck way to change gearing.

i cant go taller tires cause the tires will stick through the tonneau cover. its kind of a low truck.

dont u think getting a 6 speed tranny made for the truck would cost more than getting a custom set of gears made. as far as i know there arent any trannys that bolt up to 22REs with 6 speeds. i could be wrong though. that would be nice.

I figured as much. Your options are pretty limited, either a custom trans or custom rear gearset. Doesnt look like something you'd have on the highway a lot anyway? :confused:

Its a nice truck btw...my friend just bd'd his taco with bags and is doing new paint now. I also have a 93 s-10 with a 4/5 drop, no bags or bd.

well i hoped to be able to drive it to shows, and thats not gonna happen with these gears, unless i can get there without the freeway.

Maybe choose a differential that has the gears you want, or an engine that can keep up with the dif.

we spent over a year building the frame and body around this engine, tranny, and rearend combo and there isnt much room for anything else without a partial or full rebuild. i could prob fit a v8 or a rotary however without much firewall modification but then i couldnt pass smog and couldnt drive on the freeway anyway, even if the truck allowed it, the law wouldnt.
