regarding transmission life and cost

Hey, I'm looking to buy a 1988 rx7 gxl. The owner says that when shifting into 3rd gear quickly it scratches. The transmission of the car has 196k miles on it. and 36k miles on the rebuilt 13b. I'm wondering what the lifespan of the tranny is. The owner says that he and the previous owner (a mechanic) never beat on the car or drove it harshly. Also, in the end if I do have to replace or rebuild the tranny, how much would I be looking at paying? Thanks.

roughly 300 bucks to get a used one from japan, and 600 i think for a rebuilt one.. someone please correct me if i'm wrong. i know the used one's price, not sure about the other

i just put a tranny in my 86 and i cost me $250 for the tranny alone with 113,000 miles on it. so tranny's are about $250-$400 range

hmmm, awesome. I think I'll just suck it up and buy the car. I so want to have an rx7 and this one looks pretty good. It's got some rust on the passenger side bottom part but it still looks like a deal.

you got ripped off. a used non turbo tranny is 75-150...

the used ones in japan can only be the turbo ones which are much stronger. they are around 200-400. but to go with a turbo tranny, you gotta replace alot of parts with turbo parts.

to have one rebuilt, look to pay around 400-1200.
