Redoing Car Locks
 

Ok, my car is getting to the point where it takes me a few tries to get the key to turn in a few of the locks. Im not sure if the key is just getting way to worn out or if the cylinders are going bad. Cause the key still works on some locks perfectly fine, its just the 2 door locks that seem to jam up. So I guess I gotta do somethign about it before I end up locking myself outta my car. Any idea what would be involved in getting the locks re-done. Like pulling the igniton cylinder, the door locks and the hatch lock and getting replacements and having them recut? Is that possible?

And also, if I were to buy some blank keys, could I pull out one of my door cylinders and have a locksmith match the key up to it and make a clean new key? Or does the dealer have the key prototype or anything? Cause it may just be my key and not my cylinders.

speaking of car locks. is there anywhere where you can purchase the whole key set for the rex. one key for everything kind of kit.

My 86 rex does that. I thought all of them did.

My 91 probe also did that. Funny thing was it also opened and started my neighbors car also!! ha ha:D

if one of the locks broke or something else broke, some people go with a cheap fix and go to the junk yard and yank off a replacement for their bad one and not replace the others.

Thats why you may need 1 key for 1 door and another key for another door etc...

I have no idea about replacing the whole locking set... maybe u could just yank off all of the locks of a junk yard car and replace them all.

BTW have you tried putting silicone lubricant in your locks? if you are in cold climates and use that deicer stuff when your locks are frozen the deicer actually removes the oils used to lub the cyliinders.

I've revived a few lock barrels with copious quantities of WD40 sprayed into them. Quite often the barrels aren't actually worn, they're just full of crap. If you do replace a lock with one from a wreck, take it and your key to a locksmith and he'll rekey the lock so it works with your key.

Awhile back somebody posted a thread saying that they knew how to re-key a replacement lock to the old key - are you still on line? If not a search of the archive should find it.

Ok, its gotten to the point now where the cylinder doesnt even turn, and I gotta go to my passenger side and unlock it and crawl across to unlock the drivers side. So I need to know how to get my drivers side cylinder fixed. I tried putting WD40 in it, but that didn't do anything, so I figure I gotta get it replaced. If I went to the junkyard and yanked one out or another car, could I take it to a locksmith with my key and have him match it to my key? Or is that not possible because its already cut. If not, where can I get a new uncut lock cylinder? And not the 1,000,000 dollar ones from mazdatrix.

I had to pull the door handle to get my cylinder working again. It took two hours of constant soaking in a pool of PB Blaster to free it. I tried the key every half hour or so and it finally broke free. Be patient....it takes time to work.

You can take it apart and clean it out. It worked on mine. Yes, I was bored that day. :)

If you look on your factory key, there is a key code stamped on there. You can get new locks and keys by referencing this code. Yes, many RX-7's have the same key, even different generations.

Um, the Mazdadrix key cylinders are only $41.31.

Ya if I wanted to have a different key for that door and everything else, but I don't wanna do that, so I was talking about the entire replacement one.

Just order one with the same key code. :)

I picked up a whole new lock set for my '90 N/A from mazdasurplus.com for a whopping $30:cool: :cool:

When I bought mY car, the owner only gave my the valet key, which didn't work on the trunk or golvebox locks. Not to mention my driver's side lock tumbler wasn't working at all. That left me with only the passanger-side lock working with my ONE SWEET VALET KEY..

Sure, I could have called my local dealer and had them cut me a key, but it was my project car, it was taken apart, and I was buying many other things from mazdasurplus at the time, so I thought why not get a lock set to boot.

For $30, I figured I would just get a set of keys, but to my amazement, I got factory Mazda, brand spankin' new entire lock set!!! Ignition module, driver/passanger/trunk cylinders, glovebox lock AND 3 ORIGINAL, CUT KEYS (2 normal, 1 valet)!!!

Ummmmm, but because I have been more concerned with the engine rebuild, I have neglected to actually install my shiny new set of locks.... :p:

The key to my '93 Probe will unlock both doors, the hatch, the glovebox, and the transmission...

I'm having the same types of problems with my hatch lock though. The key will rarely get it open anymore, so I have to go around to the driver side and open it with the hatch popper. I haven't tried WD-40 though, that's a good idea.

I went to that MAZDASURPLUS site it says they have a $2000 minimum order. WTF, all I want are the lock cylinders.

Is this right?

ya, same with me. That kinda sucks eh?

Yes. I don't recall exactly what for as I've never had to use it, but it's there so that if something is wrong with the car but you still need to put it in gear for something, you can do so by sticking the key in there.

I'll look in the users manual later. :D

UNlock the transmission:

Many automatics have an unlock feature that allows you to move the shifter out of park into neutral or whatever - you stick your key tip in the little unlock area, and wallah!!

As far as ordering from Mazdasurplus.com - you simply get charged a $50 fee if ordering less than $2000 in stuff. Not really a big deal considering the bargins they have....
