Rebuilding a turbo with shaft play-
Anyone rebuilt a turbo?
Turns out the one that's on the way to me has some shaft play. It came off of a car with 140Kmiles, and apparantly (I havn't seen it yet- the seller just told me this today, at least he's being honest :) ) the turbine almost, or just barely touches the housing. Turbos arent exactly complex units- I'm sure you can just replace the bearings??? How much you I be looking at to buy the bearings/seals, whatever- and where would I get them?? Oh- stock S4 turbo. Thanks |
You can get a generic Garrett T04 rebuild kit, which included everything you want.  Most turbo shops will charge you $100-$150 for this rebuild kit - it has all the bearings and seals you'll need.
MARK THE COMPRESSOR WHEEL AND NUT so you put them back on the same orientation.  This is the key to keeping everything in balance without having a shop having to rebalance the while rotating assembly. -Ted |
Thanks- that's a lot of damn money for a couple of bearings though!!!
I guess they have to be decent to support the 30,000 rpms of a turbine though.... |
Try 110-120,000 rpm!
|
Double Damn!
|
The rebuild kits usually include...
(2) oil journal bearings carbon seal carbon seal "spacer" bushing turbine piston ring thrust bearing compressor housing soft o-ring (I think that's it) It's not bad for a little over $100.  With proper care, your turbo should last the next 100,000 miles! -Ted |
Actually that does seem a tad expensive. I rebuilt the turbo off my 12AT, and the place I went to sold me a TO4 rebuild kit for NZ$95 and then rebalanced everything for NZ$35! That's about US$60. I was expecting it to cost way more! :D

Oh, we're not going to get into a U.S. versus N.Z. debate on shop prices again...I had enough with Bitchn7!

OK I'm pissed!!!!!!!! My carbon seal keeps on getting stuck!!! I have replaced 2 already, and the same shit happens after a couple of days it gets stuck (I assume you know that it moves back and forward) My car is not going over 4,000 rpm since it is still in break-in period. No shaft play, new bushings and everything else is fine!!! can someone tell me if they have had the same experience? I can't be the unluckiest MF that got two Fucked up carbon seals in a row!!!! Damn!!!!

Never mind I found the problem, I thought I was gonna go crazy. My boost gauge was defective, my car was making 12 psi at 4,000 RPM so the carbon seal kept on breaking, now I'm running at a nice 8psi on my turbo converted n/a. I still can't believe some ignorants say that the conversion is no good. I guess that's why Puerto Rico rules!!!!!! We will be racing in New Jersey this month. Hope to break our own 8:32 @ 159 MPH on our full metal 1980 RX-7 (2278 lbs) BE THERE!!!!!!
