rebuild...or get rebuild
im a do it yourself kind of guy, plus finding someone who knows what they are doing that will work on my car is kindof hard to come by....plus being a single dad limits my time. I have a feeling my coolant seals are starting to go and i have about 135k on my 87fd. I did the clutch, radiator, steering rack myself. should i just go get a gasket kit myself and go to work or should i find somone to do it for me? is it worth the time or should i just gather some money and find somone else?

I would say do it yourself. Get a rebuild video from atkinsrotary.com and go at it.
|
No doubt man.
Do it your self. Make sure you get that video and get your self a Hayes and Factory shop manual. Also, you might want to consider buying an engine adapter so you can bolt your engine to a standard engine stand. Also, you should also get a new pulsation dampner when you do the rebuild since they cause engine fires. Also, get the thermal bypass eliminated. Atkinsrotary.com sells these. Have fun! And ask your questions here. I have never rebuilt my own engine. But when the time comes to need a new engine I will be doing it myself (And Santiago's help :) ). James |
Its a bitch, and will cost you, but its cheaper than having it done. Hell do a swap, and i dont mean the rotary type. V8, SR, anything. hehe,

Yeah definately do it your self. If there is a need in Wankel7's car we will rebuild her.
Santiago "we have the technology....she will be faster...stronger.....louder.....stinkier!" :D |
Yep I haven't built one myself yet either. But I've helped people and watched and seen everything apart plenty. Pretty damn simple actually. My next project it actually to get a spare engine and build it in my garage.
|
getting another engine just to play with is what i would really like to do...but i like learning about these cars and im to impatient to wait for somone else to do the job, although i found somone to do it for around 700$ but the gasket kit is only like 200-300. Im just worried i'll get myself in a jam and won't have anyone to help me. not to many rx7s around where i stay
|
someone is lying to ya if you think a rebuild kit costs 300 bucks. A full kit runs around 900 dollars alone.
|
I just don't know what else to do...i have the 3k rpm studder which i know is common, but its not just a studder, it seems like somone is covering my exauhst...eather my seals are going, my injectors are bad, my fuel pump may be going, i don't know. i could have a clouged cat for all i know
|
I think he was talking about the soft Gasket kit, which is $180 and some change from Atkins Rotary. The Apex seals will run you a few hundred more, plus any hard oil rings and side seals you bust. I was lucky to have two engines to get those from because I did in fact break a few. Its almost impossible not to, especially if the engine has been sitting for a while.
I still vote V8 swap. ;) |
i got those prices off this sight his wp link is in one of my old posts
|
900$??? can't you get it done for cheaper? i can't even imagine the labor costs
|
The most INEXPENSIVE rebuild around is Kevin Landers. I can stand by his work as well as anyone thats ever dealt with him as far as i know. He is the owner of Rotary Resurrection.
