Rear speakers out HELP!!!!!
 

Ok, I have done some research and have not found anything about this problem. I have a 1991 with factory digital radio/tape deck, no equalizer, not a vert. So I guess from what I have read that there is an amp for the front 4 speakers and some people spoke of 2 separate amps in the back. Anyway here is my setup: when I got the car the speakers in the back were small, 4 inch I think, no sign of an amp in the strut tower or attached to the rear speakers. I took out the metal plate and installed 8-inch Rockford Fosgate woofers. I connected the wires that were for the 4-inch speakers into a hi/lo input converter (the amp did not have a high level input) these became the input for the amp. I put the amp in the spare tire area; it looked very clean, the plastic covers fit back on the 8-inch woofers. Then one after the other each channel quit working, I checked it and the input quit working. Any ideas on why? Is there fuses or something? Is there a factory amp for the back or did the stock speakers run directly from the head unit? Also does anyone have any ideas on how I might have caused it to go out? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

when you say the input quit working do you mean there is no signal coming from the wire that pluged into the amp? if so is there and signal at the wires from the head unit before the hi/lo converter? OR if you mean the imputs on the actual amp ar not working then my first thought would be that even with the hi/lo converter you were still sending to much input voltage to the amp and may have damaged it.

Also, I tested the amp useing a portable CD player with a headphone to RCA wire, the amp is fine.

Do you have any pictures? I want to put 8inch subs in my speaker towers too. Was it difficult to fit them in? Which models Rockfords did you get by the way.

hmm perhaps the load on the rear speaker output was to little reistance or ohms?\ that may have fried the rear channelif you have a voltmeter see haw many ohms each channel has in that hi /lo converter where the speaker leads hooked up

take a look in the FSM. there is a complete wiring diagram that tells you the complete sound system routing...

you then test anything along the line from the speaker to the main source

Furious D, I attached a pic of the sub without the plastic cover, it looks completey stock with the cover on. The white stuff is caulk that I put between the metal an the speaker to reduce ratteling, I also fiberglassed the inside of the enclosure so that it is sealed (before there was huge holes which=crappy sub box).

Totalimmortal, that would have been a good idea for me to do before they stopped working, now that there is no signal comming from the head unit I think it is too late :(

Coldfire, WTF is the FSM, also one of the reasons for this thread is I wanted to find out if there is anything in the line between the head unit and the back speaker.

Any more ideas? Did I fry the back channels of the head unit or is there an amp or fuses or something else?
