Rear passenger clunking when I hit bumps (not hatch)
 

Hello all. I ...finally got fed up with this clunking or rattling from my rear passenger ..... corner .. area haha. It it NOT the hatch. I adjusted it, played with it, put a sock in the latch, and then finally drove around with it open to confirm it was not the hatch latch. There went half a day. Anyways, my car has always done it, but it recently got worse as I have installed coil overs and the rattle/clunking only happends when I hit bumps. It has nothing to do rpm or speed wise.

Does anybody have any ideas? It's really starting to piss me off!

Sounds like it could be your shock mount.

hmmmm, I just replaced those when I installed the coilovers... but I will recheck everything...

(just got back, I don't like how the rears are only held in by two bolts, but they are both tight. Also the bigger bolt on the bottom is also tight...)

Any other ideas?

I have the same problem with my car. I haven't had the time to figure it out.

It would only happen when I'm driving over bumps that create a decent oscillation, and when it happens, I would think it came from the upper tower mount, but when I went to check, everything was tight.

EXACTLY! we need to figure this out ..... I look back and watch my tower when its happening and it sounds like it's makin the noise. There must be something else I/we are missing...

I have searched and came up with maybe its the front diff mount??

Does your car stumble when you go over bumps? As in, does it seem to wander to steer on it's own a little? I'm having horrendous clunking from the right rear and the car seems to veer off a little when I hit bumps. My guess is bad bushings. Maybe DTSS bushing?

That's kinda what I was thinking after you said you put in coilovers.(cause that would eliminate possibility of strut and spring. Diff mount would be the next place I would look. Might sound stupid but what about the sway bar and the points where it connects to the vehicle.

Check your exhaust hangers? I re-did mine and now I don't have a stupid clunking anymore.

slight slope to when it hits the street

had my dad drive around while i was in the back..couldnt find out really where it was comin from tho

It can't be the diff mount. Mine is brand new and I also have a Pinion snubber pre-loaded on the pinion. That diff isn't going anywhere.

The suggestion about swaybars might be a good place to look.

I have DTSS eliminators installed, so that possibility is ruled out.

Check your main camber link.

i know exactly what your talking about, my car does this and idk what the hell it is.

Is that really the problem? My GC camber adjuster is new, and I would expect both sides to be affected if this went bad.

I'm gonna recheck everything this weekend, and see what I can find.

This (two per car) link goes on the rear control arm, forward, inboard end/pivot. When they go bad, you get an minor, irritating "clunking" from the rear when going over bumps. They seem to wear out most often on convertibles -- must just be the extra weight in the rear?

I thought, though I am a newb to camber related items, that a camper adjuster did not replace the links?

did you check your sway bar end links mine broke and "clunked" against the cv axel

there are three camber links on your car.

The one most of you know of is the subframe camber link / adjuster, the single rod. That's not the part that causes the clunking.

The other two camber links are replaced with either Mazdatrix's Individual Camber Adjusters or Stock Rear Camber Links. When those stock ones fail you will get clunking. That's probably what's causing your clunking.

ALSO, if you install the individual camber adjuster, you will get clunking. That is because the camber adjuster are much larger than the stock pieces and end up hitting the underbody.

Could be your donut nut came off and your spare is clunking around. May not be the issue, but easy to check and fix. The past day I had a rattling from my hatch area and I instantly thought 'That sounds like my donut nut'. Sure enough. So if it had come all the way off, the spare might make thud sounds.

Ok, I had to change that rear camber leak before, but I am not 100% sure I got it installed correctly / complete. I had a problem that when I was screwing the nut onto the bolt in the lateral link it was spinning the bolt. I got it as tight as I could, but is there a way to make the bolt not spin in the lateral link while installing the nut?
