Rear eccentric seal?
Do you need to take the rear stationary gear out to change the rear engine seal? Is it safe to take the rear stationary gear out? One more, can you take out and then re-torque the tension bolts one at a time to replace there seals?

The rear engine seal does not require anything done to the stationary gear. You access it from the outside of the engine.
If you touch a tension bolt you might as well rebuild. I am not 100% sure, but it should be okay to take the rear stationary gear out without too much effort, but its unnecessary to replace the seal. |
The rear main is accessible with the transmission and flywheel off. I just did mine.

Thanks for the info on the tension bolts. Would it be a good idea to invest in a seal puller for the main, cause that thing is damn big?

nope just as easy with a long screwdriver to just pop the seal out. I recently did mine but pulled the rear stationary gear out to reinstall the new one because it wasnt going in with it on. I took it out and that is where the seal gers seated so i took a 2x4 and then tapped it in the middle over the seal and it popped right in.

grab a long screw driver and pry the old one out.. clean the surface of the rear stay gear to make sure there is nothing stuck on the seal surface. put the new seal over the e-shaft and seat by hand and even as possible.. then grab a chunk of wood or just the handle of a screw drive and tap the seal in with a hammer (make sure to tap the seal in from side to side so it seats properly. JOB DONE.. go have a coke and a smile.! |
There is also an o-ring on the rear stationary gear that you should check too.

I know I have oil leaking from somewhere on the back of the engine, so to cover all my bases I ordered every seal back there. So I have both the o-ring and the big orange seal. Thanks for all the help guys, we'll crack it open later today and see what's what.

Invariably I have another question, does anyone want to buy 18 tension bolt sealing washers? $20 shipped?

Got the cast iron front for the the trans and the rear seal as well, thanks for the heads up though. Pretty much if it holds back oil from the back of the engine through the trans it's getting replaced.
