Radio intermittent problem.

Hi, I have a 1987 SE with the stock Clarion audio system. It cuts out intermittently (mostly when it's warm or when the system warms up). It will reset everything on the radio. Any ideas about this? I thought it might be the radio unit itself....but I put in an aftermarket unit and it still does it. Any ideas? I'm sorry if this has been posted before, but I checked the Archives and used the Search feature, but didn't find anything regarding this. Thanks for the help.

i have the same problem in my car. i just took the radio out as it was pissing me off. if you put in an aftermarket radio and it sill cyts out it ould have to be either a loose wire or connection somewhere on the unswitch (doesn't turn off when u turn off the key) wire

Bad solder joint inside the radio or the radio is loose in it's mounting to the dash. (the stock radio grounds through its bolts into the dash).

If it is bad solder joints inside the radio, trash it and replace it... its not worth the trouble to fix.

You have a short in your wiring harness. Most people use those crimp connectors, but don't know how to properly crimp.'

If you are still using the stock amps, resoldering them would be a good idea.

Thanks for the replies guys! I've installed an aftermarket unit, and have grounded it properly, yet it still does it. I remember reading about 6 months ago that it could be a capacitor problem in the ECU? (I'm not sure, but I remember reading that on a site/forum somewhere). Thanks again for the help guys. :)

There are no capacitors in the ECU related to stereo operation.

Claify something for me, you said that you had the stock system in the first post, but then you said you have an aftermarket unit??? Is the aftermarket radio wired to the stock amps???

if it is then you need to re-wire past the stock amps directly to the speakers. Not through the stock amps.
