Radiator cap shooting steam and coolant

Gosh damnit i took out my stock radiator because the overflow kept getting full (this radiator is very old and should have been replaced anyways) so then i throw on a dual core aluminum radiator off my old rx7 that i know works and now there is steam shooting out of the radiator cap do i just need a new radiator cap?

Yes... I'd start there. And when was the last time you serviced your cooling system??

replace the radiator cap then your motor.

the order can be switched if you want.

They speak the truth lol. One tool I found very useful being a Rotary Owner (and an auto tech) is a coolant system pressure tester. Here is a quicky example of what you'd be looking to get off amazon. But if it makes you money (like me) buy a quality one you can use everyday for a couple years at least.

Check for the champagne.

Start saving to rebuild your motor.

im rebuilding a 13b at the moment but what is this talk about rebuilding?

Bjeralds 08-25-12 09:41 PM

I believe what they are saying is that your motor could have overheated, thereby warping and compromising the coolant seal. And that the compression fom the rotors is getting into your coolant passage. I cant comment on the likelyhood of this due to lack of knowledge. Just giving my two cents.

why do cars in general spew coolant from the overflow tank? they're overheating or pushing compression into the cooling system. if you're lucky it may be the prior and you have a short few chances to correct it before the latter. if the radiator cap is holding pressure appropriately then it is already the latter.

thank you guys it makes sense now,i guess my stock temp gauge must be off or something because i would never let my rx7 overheat and trust me i glance down at that gauge at leat once every 10 seconds

RotaryEvolution 08-26-12 02:56 PM

then that pretty much rules out the system being overpressurized by the coolant boiling and for the most part limits it to combustion gasses. does the upper radiator hose get very firm within a minute or 2 of starting a cold engine? if yes then you have the answer.

Indeed!

Beer is a good substitute to champagne though. :icon_tup:
