gota quick question. i saw a pic earlier of the cold air intake and noticed something in the car that i lack.

ok i have a 87 N/A auto. ther are two fillers for the radiator one on the filler neck close to the block and the on the radiator. now the one on the filler neck has a hose that goess to the overflow tank. shoud there be a hose going from the radiator cat filler erea to the overflow tank/coolant reservoir tank as well? the pic i saw on a earlier post on the cold air intake he has a hose going from the radiator car filler to a location im assuming to the overflow tank/ coolant reservoir tank.

Do i need to have this? basically i just want to make sure i have the right set up.

The only tube you need is the one going from the radiator cap to the overflow tank... The radiator cap should be a pressure cap that will allow the water to be pushed out into the overflow tube.

the cap that is on the water neck off the waterpump housing should be a flat cap, and the plastic part that it screws into may have what looks like a tube connector on it, but it should be a dummy and not have a hole in it.

Thats the stock setup..

It depends on the model year, that is the later model stock setup.

The earliest models have the filler cap and overflow tube mounted on the thermostat neck, along with an overflow bottle on the driver's side strut tower. The radiator is smooth topped.

Later S4's had a flat cap on the thermostat neck and a pressure cap on the radiator. The overflow hose went from the radiator cap to a front mounted overflow bottle.

I don't know how S5's are set up with that funny radiator neck.

midnightride42: Your car is OK as long as the fitting on the radiator isn't designed for an overflow (as in, it won't leak with a flat cap.)

well as long as i had the car, and i purchased it from a mazda mechanic here in town, it was et up the way it is not. i did however accidently brake the black little nose that comes of the balck part whre the hose connetcts to off and just took the on of the radiator and put in place of the broken one sence there was no hose anyways on the radiator part. also switched the caps i guess i need to swith the caps again . i was asking cause for as long as i had this car the coolend uzzer will come on and no ill look to seee if there is coolent there and yes coolent s in the tank. when i open the filler tupe by the thermostat there wont be much fluid in there at all. so then i would fill it up and boom no more buzzer. so i relplaced the thormostat and noteiced it s running a lot cooler. thought maybe the problem was the hoses then. sence then ones it has done the same thing again . so i just filled it up. i for a split second have blueish smoke but very light blue smoke coming when i start the engien cold in am. but goes away very fast. but think thats normal cause we run so rich and i have one hight flow cat but rest all 2.5 exhaust.

anyone else have some input. thanks

anyone got some input on the smoke color issue?


also if i do hook up a hose going form teh radiator cap to the resavoir tank will that hurt anything? so the set up is the same as in the pic?

Your post from the 23rd is nearly impossible to follow.

Run the car til warm and look for a coolant leak. Find it, fix it. Running another hose to the overfolw could work as a temporary solution if you have overflows on the rad and the thermostat neck, however if you have two you would need to run two pressure caps and eventually convert it back to a single overflow location.

well what im saying is im not loosing coolant underneath the car. just everynow and then the buzzer comes on and i have to fill up where the filler neck is to make the buzzer go off. the car has never overheated sence i have owned. it is a new block that has about 20 000 miles on it . i replace the thermostat just recently and sence it hasnt been buzzing. noticed the temperature is staying a lot cooler than it was before. the picture i was reffering to had two hoses going to he resevoir tank one from the filler neck by the thormostat and one right of the radiator. basically i just wanted to make sure i wasnt missing something.

also how can you tell your burning radiator fluid? i know it has to do with the exhaust color right? what color and will this color be there all the time or just for a short period of time?
