quietest single muffler available

I have a 87 t2 with a full racing beat exhaust. I love how its quiet. I know a single exhaust won't be as quiet as the big resonator and 2 main mufflers, But I was thinking about keeping the rb resonator, but going single 3" the whole way back. Who makes the quietest mufflers, racing beat? Can I even buy just mufflers?

Anyone know if there will be any performance gains from going single? I have a street ported s4 engine with a bnr stage 3

I'd be worried about boost creep...

but other than that I'm literally doing the same exact thing. You'll need to be careful because rotaries have a habit of melting what most mufflers are packed with (fiber glass mat)

This is the muffler I'm going to go with:
SM-300-625-17-2S

i've done a few FC's with the RB center muffler, and a custom catback, and they all stay quiet enough.

the RB center muffler, does most of the silencing, and the rear muffler controls most of the tone.

the best sounding one was an RB center with a borla on the end, it sounded like a race car, but volume was totally fine

the sound of the RB power pulse cans for an end of system sound reduction have a quiet yet deep tone to them. add a turndown and it is my preferred choice.

an XR-1 would probably work well for a mid system deadener since it doesn't muffle quite as well and leaves a little of the sharp Db's in place.

thanks for the link! You think there would be bad boost creep with the bnr stage 3? I am going to be making a bell mouthed design downpipe. My main problem now is hoping the flange from turbo to downpipe doesn't warp and leak

im surprised its so cheap!

Doubt you'll gain any power over the full RB exhaust. All you'll gain in noise and the look of one missing muffler at the back.

jjwalker 01-25-14 10:56 AM

Aaron, what was the brand of presilencer you used on your car? I forgot the name but I remember you can find them at a reasonable price on summit racing.

GrossPolluter 01-25-14 12:16 PM

I was more thinking about doing it for weight savings.

Also I want to get my car on a lift, I tried adjusting the exhaust and I can only get one side to fit real nice, the other side is a tad off. Sorry, I don't mean to sound anal

The stock exhaust, cats and all, weighs less then a set of RB True Duals. When I was bringing my car back to stock to sell it, I tripped on that fact.
Single is a good call!

RotaryEvolution 01-25-14 06:54 PM

when it comes to quieting the car down the most possible though, nothing can beat duals. depends where you stand with that.
