Quiet/Unobnoxious BOV
Yes I know, unobnoxious is not a word. I don't care. Anyway, what are some BOV's that are more low key, for example...not a greddy type s. I want something that isn't going to piss me off too much. Also, can I recirculate one ok or do I need to vent it to the atmosphere?
Thanks |
You can get a stock FD BOV, port it to handle big boost(LOTS of FD guys do this, its a really good BOV when ported), and reroute it to the UIM. Very subtle, you can still hear it, but it's no shrill-Type S
|
I like the sound of the Greddy-RS, just the sound of air escaping. Just like it should be. No whistle, no gimmick just a woosh of air. Similar to a compressed air canister being released.
|
I know what you mean F1, but the quieter the better. So far the FD BOV sounds like a decent plan.
|
If you're insulted by the GReddy Type-S, then almost anything else is going to sound just like it, similar, or worse.
Other BOV's can be high pitched and shrill - these annoy me; one good example is the HKS SSBV. If you're going to bitch about them like that, your one option is to recirculate it back, period. -Ted |
if your looking for an nice blowoff valve i have a Apexi Twin Chamber thats already mounted on a 6" pipe that fits between the Turbo and Intercooler. since it comes with the pipe ill let it go for 100 shipped
|
WEll you can buy an HKS since they have the optional adaptor to recirculate it.
And no not all BOV's are so annoying. My buddy just installed the new APEX BOV and it sounds good. It has an adjustbale vent collar so you can "tune" the sound. It sounds like a smooth rush of air. Not an explosion of wind into the atmosphere......LOL |

Thats the one I'm talknig about.......it sounds nice and smooth. Not intrusive at all. |
i also have a Apex'i with direct fit pipe for sale.....
i dunno i guess i wanted something louder(i knwo im a ricer) |
Answer: get a HKS SSQ bov and buy an interchangeable silenced fin (which runs around 15 bucks)...
|
I thought that you can recirculate with a type S.. I have a type rs and with a adapter you can make it recirculating..
|
tial very quiet
|
haha believe it or not.. the hks ssqv is really quiet if you cut the three whistle fins out you cant hear it at all...and if you do think you are hearing it it sounds like a punch of air.. like you blowing through a paper towel roll.. not very loud and yes the hks can be recirculated..
|
boost is very important for sound of bov, high boost can create nice sound
|
boost amount does change the sound, at ~5psi the HKS sounds like a little pop of air, at 10+ it sounds like a really high pitched shrill rush of air.

I have a Tial BOV!!! That's quite possibly the loudest BOV ever made!!!! It has the most direct route to atmosphere of any BOV design I hjave ever encountered. This thing can knock birds out of the air!!!! AHAHaHA |
hks is NOT loud with the fins out......
|
I have one of the ghetto home depot ones... I love it. I cant hear it, but its not loud.
|
I have a Sard R2D2. It was on my JDM FC. It sounded awesome, not loud or ricey at all. Just a nice woosh of air, and the sound is adjustable as well, so u can quiet it down to almost nothing. If you are ionterested in it, shoot me an offer.

Man, I can't believe some of these replies.
If you've never heard a GReddy Type-S before, you shouldn't be offering advice. ALL OPEN VENTED BOV'S ARE GOING TO BE LOUD, PERIOD. If you don't know what a GReddy Type-S sounds like, then how do you know it's more quiet / just as loud / louder??? You cannot adjust an open-vented BOV to be dead quiet. The only way to do this is to prevent it from opening, period. Then you basically have a BOV that doesn't do ANYTHING. Geezuschrist people, they only way the original poster is going to have his wish to have a quiet BOV is to recirculate it, period. I laugh when people claim the Tial is quiet - it's not if it's doing it's job properly. The same goes for the A'PEXi twin-chamber - sure you can tune the sound with the ring, but all those does is change the pitch. If you're cranking it all the way to almost closed, you're preventing the BOV from doing it's job. If the BOV is not doing it's job, the turbo is going to compressor surge itself to death. The BOV's job is not to make funny noises when you lift off the throttle. It's there to prevent damage to the turbo from compressor surge. -Ted |
my tial isnt totally sllent but its alot quieter than the greddy stuff

My Type-S doesn't go off unless I go into several psi of boost. It doesn't get really loud unless I go WOT. The Type-S is adjustable, and it might be that people are running them very loose. -Ted |
In my experience, the Apex'I is quiet. Your ears may vary. :)
|
so what is a loud ass bov? for over 5 psi but under 10 psi
I want to sound like a 18-wheeler..... :icon_tup: |
^Turbo XS RFL (really fucking loud)
