Quick question about rear diff and axle stubs

On the rear diff, when you pull the axle stubs out, you have one long one, and one shorter one. What side should each one go, and is is possible to put them in the wrong side? I am just sitting here trying to brainstorm ideas on what is wrong with my rear end, and the idea popped into my head that if It was possible to have the axle stubs in the wrong sides, that may have been causing my problem. (see post: https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=221456 ) I really hope that could be my problem...

uhm....yep. One is a good couple inches longer than the other. I was thinkin, if it was possible to put them in backward, the longer stub may have been crossing over into the other side of the LSD, making both sides have to spin at the same speed, acting as a locked diff.

Hmm...well after talking to a few more people, it seems that the axle stubs should both be the same length....which means this is my problem. I guess the person that I bought the GTUs rear end from had another axle in there for some god-awfull reason. Just to make sure, can anyone else confirm that the axle stubs are the same length?

I just dug around for the axle's out of my s4 n/a diffy and they are looking like there the same length. I dont have ne tools so i cant actualy mesure, but next to each other they look the same

could you accidently goten axles mixed up? I have 1 turbo axle which is about an inch longer than the n/a one, maby you have missmatched parts between lsd's
i do know the n/a ones are not as wide as the turbo ones

Wow, that's fucked...

As far as all the half axles I've taken out, they all looked to be identical.

Yea I know....I guess the guy that I bought the GTUs diff from maybe accidentally shoved the wrong axle in there...... Im happy that I finally found out the problem though. Ive never had another set of stubs laying around to compare to, or I probably wouldve cought this sooner.... Oh well. Thanks for all the help :)

OK, one more question. Are the axles stubs on an open diff differennt sizes? Because I have one Rx-7 left at my junkyard, and it is a 88SE, and I was going to go pick the axles stubs from it, and wanted to make sure they would be the same. Thanks..

My 87Base diffy is "open" or whatever you want to call it, its not a limited slip by any means, and they are the same lenght

The RX-7 Factory manual states that the output shafts are different lengths with the viscous L.S.D. --- i.e. GTUs (passenger side is longer). (Pages M-20 and M-36)

Cool, thanks alot. So hopefully that was my problem , that with the torsen LSD it can't have 2 different size shafts. Well see... *crosses fingers*
