Quick Question

what does the 80A main fuse do ????

it jus got blown and im gona replace it but i was wondering wut it does...

Runs between the charging system and the rest of the fuses, so the power goes through that bugger before going out to the rest of the car.

Something like that anyway.

Goes to 2 x 30Amp Circuit Breakers for Heter (sic) & A/C and Rear Window defog.
Ignition Switch "B" System
Charging System.
If the fuse blew, its not likely the first 2, as they are protected by the Cct. Brkrs.
Leave ignition off to determine if its the alternator (most likely) or something in the "B" System.
Hope that helps.

If you've been messing around the alternator lately you might have shorted the large black wire that is the output of the alternator. That will blow the 80amp fuse. Been there, done that taking the intercooler off and it touching the output wire of the alternator (I know, you are non-turbo, same principle.

Another place to look......about six inches below the engine fuse box, there is a large gauge black wire with a single connector on it. Look for a frayed connector there.

If the fuse blows again, without turnin the key to ON.....then go to your ignition wire connectors that are located about a foot down the steering column from the ignition switch. Pull apart the two wire connector that has one BLACK WIRE and one BLACK/WHITE wire. Then if you don't have a meter......put yet another new 80 amp fuse in. If it blows....then there is a dead short b/t the ignition switch connector and the 80 amp fuse. It could be the alternator, so you could take that wire off before doing the above.

Aw heck...there's a dozen different ways to find it (the short). Just exercising the fingers this morning. Buy a manual with the schematics. I've already posted jpgs of that area a dozen times in the past.
